Looks like a heck of a lot of work but it seems that you did a great job.

Let us know how much of a difference it all made in the acoustics dept.

Dang!

Sorry, just upgraded my computer to finally see what folks are doing. Seriously, I couldn't see anything... Post with pic's... ahhh, dang.

Now me gots a kick ass machine.

First off. great job. really. Dash too. The Vanagon is clean via the Seam Sealer in the interior. Your pic's tell the story. Even the step ups are clean. Very Lucky. Why?

From my POV, the step up is a throw back to the original design.

Now, all is prepped in the interior,
my heart of hearts goes to exterior, you done a amazing job inside of the cabin, look at the Seam Sealer on the Outside ( under the seats, etc.) This inspection can cause one to go down another deep Rabbit Hole, but, if its a Love, then have a look.

GREAT JOB!!!!!

Thanks tiki!

I get back home in a couple weeks and will check that area out. I was also thinking about getting the step ups rhino lined. Not sure though. Reading your posts. I was wondering if you were an auto body repairman? You really seem to know your stuff.

p.s. to all. I have never done anything like this before. Everything I have done, I have learned from the Samba. Thanks to all for the posts.

Cheers,

Jason

Those pictures are exactly what my Westy looked like. I gutted mine to change the color from the orange/brown to all white. That was about four years ago and I'm just now putting the finishing touches on mine. What can I say, I'm not good, but I'm slow. When I get time I will post all the pics.

Dude, I totally have the same rear door for my garage. I did not know they made those types of doors for cars. Very trick!

I put 4 layers of brown bread dampening paper in two thicknesses all over an extended cab toyota pickup, it was "lexus quiet" except for the glass parts..stuck really well even on the ceiling. It takes a long time to do it right but it makes a huge difference for the sound system (truck had several audio upgrades) Putting some on the engine compartment does wonders, as well (the hood) you have to use the stuff for high temps though, it has more of a foil on top usually.

<-----------------------------------PART 2--------------------------------------->

Well I’m back to work so here is what I did last time I was home. I removed the old wall paper stuff from the inside panels and repainted them. I took a piece of the wall paper stuff into home depot and they matched it perfectly. You can see in the pic the color of the panels before. The PO tried to match the Asuan Brown but looked like poop. See Mightyarts post for panel repair.

primed and ready to go

Installed 100ft of B-quiet and installed new insulation. I did run out of B-quiet at the back above the engine compartment. But at least I got everything else. Here are pics with B-quiet and insulation.

The plastic behind the lower front door panels was trashed and I was trying to find something to replace it with. I was going to use double sided tape and some painters plastic when I ran across this stuff at the Home Depot.

I remember when I moved into my house the movers put this sticky plastic stuff on the floor so they did not trash the carpet. I cleaned the door as much as I could and cut a piece bigger than the hole in the door. After I put it on I used a razor blade to trim off the excess. THIS STUFF WORKS GREAT! You can barely see that it’s even there. When I removed the top plastic it only tore in a couple of places so I just reused it and used this carpet protector to patch up where it tore.

I’m going to put wood (laminate) floors in and found this stuff made by Burke.

It has this amazing finish with a 30yr warranty. I did have to buy two boxes since I was two boards short. It’s going to look nice so who cares.
Next I have to put in the closet, top storage and install the floor. The panels look great.

hey westy, regarding the plastic, there are two types you can use. one is for carpet (like you used) and is extremely stick y and will be permanent on a surface like a door skin. the other is low-tack and can be more easily positioned and likedly removed if you ever need to. i just thought i'd point this out for anyone else who may use it.

here is an online source for each:

Carpet Protection film: the high tack stuff

Floor Protection film: the low-tack, repositionable stuff

Thanks for the links! I think this stuff is going to hold up well. I will let everyone know next year how well it works.

Thanks for the comments! I'm sure the next guy will do one better than mine. Remember you can never take too many photos when you are doing work on your projects; I wish I would have taken more. I'm getting the propane tank powder coated right now but forgot to take a "before" photo, I'm sure we all know what a rusty old tank looks like. I will post a picture of it when I get it back.

Dude, I got your back w/ the propane tank pic. I will take one of mine. The van came from SanFrancisco and I swear someone, on a daily basis, sprayed the van w/ sea water. Jesus H. My propane tank is a beauty.

"So I assume people are using the B-quiet Ultimate, and not the Extreme?"

Jeepwillies, I used the Extreme, figuring the thickness difference between the two would likely not make that big a difference in the van. I did actually use two layers in some spots, though. I have not done the front compartment of the camper yet, only from behind the fronts seats on back. Good luck with your project!
