I have a 68 Dormobile. It's a great bus but
it has a gasoline odor that seems to come from the air scoops on the side of the bus. Since we have an attached garage and my bus is certainly always garaged, the smell is starting to cause problems with the wife [she just doesn't understand!]. Any ideas on whether the problem can be cured.
Thanks.

Anything can be cured, it just depends on how long you want to look for it. I would check gas lines as I know my fuel pump was spitting some out of the copper tubes going in them. Other times, I have fuel coing out the carbs and cuts in fuel lines (that sucked)
Just look around and I bet you will find the problem and be able to fix it easily. Pull out that trusty Mag Light.

68 buses did not have the divider panels between the gas tank and the engine. That started in 69. This just adds to the other possibilities of where you might be leaking.
Tank bottom might be rusty, hoses on the neck of the tank cracked, tank vent hoses might be cracked. Okay,,,,so sell me your
bus... |

| Also check the seal on the gas cap. The most likely problem is the sending unit seal leaking. It also happens to be the hardest to fix.I'm not sure about a 68, but a 69 bus requires removal of the engine to remove the tank to fix the seal. Good luck. |

| hey i don't know if this helps but on my fastback I would get gassed out, ithought it was coming from the engine. I couldn't find it so I followed line from engine and no. so I went to the source the gas tank. I found some rotted lines like the overfill and the rubber that connects the fill-up spout to the tank. replaced w/german lines went for a ride and it seemed to work fine so I filled it up w/gas driving home the smell was back... Made acces to the top of the fuel tank and I could see and smell all the dried up gas it was coming from on top of the tank were the bolts are they were all loose. so I tightened them and no more gas smell. check those bolts/screws tighten them also hoses of course replace any rotting ones.Follw your nose it always knows and then look for the build up of dried gas.. let me know if this was the problem. peace be careful get a fire estinguisher..
