Does anyone know if the chrome Empi Deck Lid Springs work on Ghia's.
I have a 71' Convertable and thought I would dress up the engine compartment a little by replacing the painted deck lid springs with some nice bright chrome ones. I placed them in the second hole from the bottom edge of the bracket but they don't seem to hold the lid up. I am starting to wonder if these are VW Beetle Lid Springs |

Try another hole that provides more compression on the spring. _________________ 1971 Ghia Convertible Autostick

I can't seem to find a good reference on the Internet but I do remember hearing that electroplating springs will reduce their tension, or k-value. Anecdotally, a friend chromed his stock Camaro hood springs and now the hood sags.
Closest I could get:

search "electro"..
But if you bought them chromed... they should work better than that. Try all the settings, if not, send them back. _________________ 67 Ghia, 1776 with dual Dellortos, Engle 110, 914 2.0L alloys |

Also at isssue is the compound and tensile properties of the spring steel used by EMPI vs VW. Engineers designed the original, then the Asians made shiny copies. Lesson learned. _________________ Jason Hamilton

| I tried the chrome aftermarket ones one time. It didn't work. I had my original springs chrome plated and they worked just fine. Much better quality chrome too. |

I will give the two upper holes a try. The tension on the new chrome springs is so great compared to my old springs I had to recruit two big huge body builder type co-workers to muscle these puppy's into place.
The grip strength needed to install the chromed Empi's is just wicked... and then the darn lid still won't stay up ...to be continued! I may need to go the re-chrome route. Thanks you guys. |

If that is the case I would just go back to the originals. _________________ 1971 Ghia Convertible Autostick

If you place ORIGINAL hood springs as deck lid springs, they won't hold too!
Deck lid springs are thicker than hood springs! _________________ The glory never gets old, it just need new paint. |
