what is the widest tires i can put on a 5.5 rim. im going for the california style like in the new hot vw mag.

Probably about a 215/65r15, or 215/70r15.....somewhere in there.

Tire Rack had a tire size calculator that shows minimum and maximum sizes for your rims. Punch in the tire size you're interested in and search for all applicable brands. When you choose the tire you want click on "Specs" to see the min and max rim sizes.

I've got 205/50 x 15 tires on stock VW rims:

I'm running 205/60/R15 tires on 5.5" rims.
That's the widest I could (legally) go on a 60 series tire. I could run a wider tire but risk my own safety and could potentially have insurance hassles in the event of an accident. I'm in Ontario Canada and don't know what your local regulations might be but it is also the widest size that the manufacturer (Michelin) recommended for my rims.
