I purchased a kit from member dreadnotmusic back in 2010 and I just got around to putting it together this year . I have everything sorted but the upholstery. I am going to use Sunbrella Canvas Bay Brown Fabric to cover it but I don't know the size and type of foam I should be using. Can anyone help me out with this? I don't want to make the foam too thick or I will have issues closing the roof. What have other people been using for comfort and fitment?
Here are some pictures of my install.

I bought the same kit and just got around to installing it this year. i couldn't find info on the foam either and ended up using a memory foam mattress which is too thick. I have 4" now but am thinking that it should be 2" max. luckily it is made of 2 2" layers so I'll end up peeling the top one off. _________________ DAC

Thanks for the reply James. That info comes in handy since I am about to guess on the thickness. I guestimated 3 inch max but I might scale it down now you have replied. I will post my results. _________________ 1973 Campmobile rustoration in progress..

If you look on Page 1 of this topic thread, you will find the following dimensions that I posted, regarding my genuine, British specification, 1973 VW 1600 Type 2 Westfalia Continental elevating-roof bed:
« The elevating-roof bed, with a 15~16mm thick multi-ply, plywood baseboard and 30 mm thick upholstery (cloth-covered, high-density foam polymer), has a maximum rated load capacity of 80 kilograms. »
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=275900&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
Hence, foam of about 1¼ inches thick, might be more appropriate than your 3 inch guesstimate! _________________ Regards.

I bought the kit from stevem49090 and didnt see any mention on the foam thickness with his kit. I bought the plywood per his specs which are slightly different: 11/16" vs 16 mm. However the difference is minimal. It appears that the foam could be 1.3125" thick roughly. I'm gonna try 2" anyway since that is what I have, probably this weekend. I'll let ya'll know.
Just curious, did you leave the grab handle on the roof? _________________ DAC

Hello guys. I made a custom continental bed with vintage screen printed fabric and memory foam (two sheets deep) in three panels. I had a 73 Camper but we had to part ways.
The top panel (towards the nose of the bus) is just a pillow (no wood) as the pop-top wouldn't shut with it up there otherwise. It's on pretty thick birch panels. You can just climb up and pull the last panel up behind you when you're ready for sleep. I spent around 350 to make it. Looking to sell it for 450 for the 12+ hours I put into making it. That pillow sham is hand stitched!
If you're interested PM me.

Unfortunately, Jon (Faux) can't make them at the moment. So I'm looking for someone who does, any idea?
Alternatively, where can one find a description/dimension of the parts? I'm happy to get on the case and why not, make a small batch. |

My kids are getting big enough now that we can't all fit in the lower bed and I don't want them falling out of that cot. I wanna rock this mod this year.
Anyone still selling the hardware kits?
Can you weld the hinges to the roof? Kind of uneasy about the drilling...
How heavy is this contraption? I'm an aerospace engineer. Wondering if there is a way to fabricate this out of something stronger and lighter. |

Enjoyed reading the thread and you might try foamsource.com for foam. I don't know if 2-inches is too thick, but 1-inch of super high density foam paired with 1-inch of memory foam is great to sleep on. If you don't like memory foam, it can be changed out to your preferences. Just go to Custom Foam on the sidebar at their website. _________________ '78 Westy (P22), 2.0FI (GE), 4speed (CP), thought I was buying a VW, ended up with a Bentley. |

Been emailing back and forth with Faux, but he's had to stop since he can't get all the parts anymore.
But, we found another person in the UK who makes them. We just spent today installing the bed in my brother's 71 and it's an awesome idea. The kit is pretty well made and that one doesn't have the same hinge system as the original model. Instead, there is a spare plank that you can install from up there. We ended up making a smaller one (the kids will sleep up there) so that they're not stuck there once they're up - there'll be a gap remaining in the roof opening.
And the guy making those was a pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended. See some pictures on his website :

So, I installed my continental bed last season and it works famously besides one thing. The front of the pop top doesn't close all the way down now. So I was thinking about adding some hold down straps to the front of the top to secure it. Has anyone done this? I was thinking of some nice leather hood straps such as these https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productdetails.asp?RecID=8600
I had a good look and found that it's the foam on the matteress that is too thick. Since I had it custom upolstered I don't want to tear it apart to install thinner padding. Thoughts? _________________ 1973 Campmobile rustoration in progress..

Personally I would replace the foam before I added more holes/straps to my bus. Did you specify the thickness? Did the shop maybe not follow your instructions? They could pretty easily put some thinner foam in there for you. At least give them a call. _________________ 1976 Westy

I just found out about this and this seems to be the perfect solution so I can sleep in the pop top of my 69. |

Since Faux isn't selling kits anymore, I emailed the folks in the UK about the kit in the link above, but got no response
Would love to buy a nice kit that someone already has everything grouped in. But with the lack of options, I'll be fabricating my own based off of directions in this thread. Doesn't look too difficult, just a little time consuming and requires some "leg work" to locate like parts (or suitable) to make it function like the original. A few other things to tackle on the westy first though. _________________ Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 2006

It is for sure. Unless you are small and like to pretend you are sleeping on a rack in a sub in WW2 _________________
