$6000 was insane at that time.

No doubt, most of the really nice and interesting Buses you'd see would top out at about $3,000 at that time.

This is the engine that came with the bus....anyone know the correct production date? Also there is the factory rebuilt stamp, along with two squares that I can't make out the letters. In the center there is a very small VW stamp with 99?

Below all the stamping there are a few numbers etched in by hand that are super hard to make out. Has anyone seen anything like this? What's the history?

Also located large diamond reflectors that needed some TLC due to broken studs.

Nice work on the reflectors.

On the engine, are there any stampings on the left and right sides of the generator stand?

That engine # is wacky, like someone with no motor control stamped it.

BTW, I own this Bus now. Yey me.

The '55 does not have the original door keys but as far as I know it should have the key seen on the right above. If anyone has a blank, I would very much like to get one cut. I already asked Gabriel the key guy if he had one. He did not.

The ignition key is the same as the above style key.

The decklid/cargo door/driver's door are all the same key but it's just a universal replacement key.

The key is a key blank from Taylor Lock Co., which used to make key blanks for lots of cars in the USA.

Everett, what part number is your cargo handle (can you get a mirror behind there)?
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
I see it has a ridge in it - I wonder if all BD cargo door handles are like that?
my similar handle has part no. (vw logo)221.841.631 BuM

compared to another handle i have:
>it has the ridge
>the fat end of the handle is sort of squared off (not rounded)
>the handle tip is wider

the other handle i have has no part number.

The part # is as you stated above.
Some photo details are below.

The outer cargo door handle tip is approx 1 cm wide.

I would be surprised if both handles were not original given the condition and the overall state of the Bus.

Here is the handle from my 1.55 Kombi, it also looks ridged:
