I was at Ohio University at the time. It was probably the only time a college student was more worried about his parents in a much colder Cleveland than they were about their son away at college. Here is an interesting link for you young folks... (Yes, that voice is the infamous Gov. James Rhodes of Kent State May 4, 1970 infamy)

So, you must have been at OSU when I was at Akron. Went to Kent in '81 for grad school.

I remember that storm. I was 8 at the time. We had drifts through our back yard that were about 5' deep the whole length of the yard, so we got shovels and tunneled. And, we were out of school for a week. |

Duh. Must be the aftereffects of all that hashish in college. My cousin matriculated at Athens, but she wound up at Columbia for her degree. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Didn't the whole country get a heavy winter that year? If I remember right it snowed in areas of California that "never" get snow. _________________

I remember '78, though I was only 6.
We were hit with a decent ocean storm the other day. I went out after the snow began to take a few pictures.
The next morning on the way to plow.
I love snow!!! _________________ Each day is precious. |

Funny this should come back up.

I looked up records for where I was living at the time (SE Iowa) and we didn't get a thing aside from a light dusting of snow. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

I was just over 1 year old at the time living in Dublin New Hampshire but I remember my parents saved a stack of newspapers related to the storm which I think they still have. _________________ KK4NTP

I was 22 at that time, and was the sound engineer for a rock band. We had just completed a several day gig at a club in Pontiac Michigan, just above Detroit and loaded up the truck and headed for home (northwest PA....about a 300 mile drive) leaving at about 3 AM. I owned the 1 ton 1976 Chevy C-30 truck I was driving with a 350 motor and a 12 x 8 x 8 box and it was packed to the gills with sound, lighting and band equipment - I had decent traction. As daylight broke driving on I-90 along Lake Erie the interstate we could see the median was littered with cars and jack knifed semis. If not for an "appointment" I had scheduled later that day in my home town with a local Justice of the Peace for a minor transgression, I don't think I would have attempted to keep driving, but I was 22 and pretty much bullet proof. I-90 was officially closed as we drove through Cleveland, but there was not really anywhere to go by getting off of the interstate, so we continued and DID make it home, and of course learned once I got there that nothing was open including the local district magistrate. It was as nasty and frigid as anything I ever encountered. We (our band) moved to LA in January of 1980, and I have lived in Southern California ever since and I've never missed winter one bit. If I want snow I can see it on the local mountains, and if I am feeling particularly masochistic, I can drive there in about two hours. _________________ "A camel is a horse designed by a Committee" |

When I see a photo like this I miss winter. The heavy silence of cold air. You know what I mean? Cold heavy silence that surrounds you like a warm blanket. Nice. _________________ KK4NTP

I too remember. This southern boy spent that winter (actually my first year in the Navy) at the Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, IL. 40 miles north of Chicago. Everyday we were detailed out to shovel snow. Piles of snow beside the sidewalks higher than my head. You'd throw the snow on the pile and half of it would fall back down on you. Used the outside window ledge on my 3rd floor barracks room as a freezer and the inside ledge was cold as a refrigerator. Required to go to class in dress uniform, we wore our boondockers and carried the dress shoes. Chest deep snow drifts, watched a bunch of idiots playing football in the drifts.
It was said that there are only two seasons at Great Lakes......winter and the 4th of July. I don't know about that, I was on leave at home in NC for the 4th.
I've said before winter is better than summer, because you can always put on more clothes but you can only take off so much. I have to rethink that statement.........sweating is better than freezing. _________________ I'm not losing my hair, it's just retired and relocating further south.
