|
|
Hi
Im a scale model builder, and i like building VW models.
Recently i've finished the model of 1967 VW type 2
You can see more pictures here: http://mastermodels.blogspot.com/2011/04/vw-van-hasegawa-124-final-photo-shoot.html
The reason im writing this post is im building the 1950 sun roof split bug, and i have few questions regarding original fitout of the car.
Firstly, i dont know if i should depict the small vents on the front wings, just top of the front bumper. I've sourced the fotos on the internet, and it shows the cars with, and without the vents.
Heres the picture of the area im talking about.
So far i have only managed to put the engine, and the floorpan together.
You can see the progress here: http://mastermodels.blogspot.com/2012/11/vw-kafer-1959-revell-116.html
From now on i will be updating the progress in here also, as you guys are great source of information, and with your help im sure i will build the most accurate model possible.
Greetings from Poland

To me, the round horn grilles (vs. oval) are the single most distinguishing feature of the front view of a split bug. Without round grilles, it may as well have just an oval rear window and snowflake taillights. _________________

There seems to be 2 different types of the grilles- one oval type, and one round like the one below. The round is the right one right?

A '50 split I believe had the round grille.
The oval one was introduced on the Oct. 1952 model. |

Thanks again. I didnt get it clearly first time asking.
I know now which part needs to bettered for my model.
The model part is so crude it is basically unuseable. |

That is a beautiful bus model. The detail is amazing and so well proportioned. Congratulations. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

Fantastic bus . Very realistically weathered.
Also, to confirm your question, a split window beetle will have round horn grilles. The oval grilles were on 52-67. _________________ "In order to create, you have to destroy." |

Your bus model is amazing looking. I do have a question though. Were you going for an original look? The reason Im asking is I believe the turn signals should be a later style like these in the link.

I converted the bus the the early model, with the small back window, and different lights, and turn signals. The kit was of the bus from 1967. |

I know this is a question thread, but I had to chime in. Excellent work!
I almost want to see the bus pictured next to something small so I can see the real scale. It looks too real and the composition of your shots definitely help it look like a full size bus. _________________ '63 slow n low build thread...

This set of pictures may just give you indication of scale:

to your original question. Deluxe splits had round grilles. Standard beetles did not have any horn grilles as the horn was attached to the back of the front bumper like this
Note this photo is of a 48 as it has "banana" bumpers which a 50 would not. So if you are doing a 50 deluxe split beetle = round horn grilles. Note that the right hand side grille is a false grille (metal behind the grille).
And the photo of the bus is pretty amazing |

Thanks L378. I noticed the false grille on the right, but wasn,t sure it was present on all 1950 bugs. Now i know for sure. |
