Does anyone know how to open the trunk on a 72 Super if the latch in the glovebox has come loose?

I've tried to pull on the cable but that doesn't seem to release it.

Help!

Just the lever in the glovebox came off the glovebox itself, the cable is right there, shouldn't I just be able to pull on the cable while someone pushes the button on the hood and lifts?

Before you start sawing, have someone hold the lever down while you pull on the handle. Could be frozen as well. Warm it up.

If you do have to saw, you must saw it in two places so you can unscrew both halves. The handle is widely available and easily replaced. The Bentley manual even describes the cutting procedure.

In a perfect world.

Here are some links that contain a few other suggestions than cutting the handle.

That's what I thought but when I pull the release lever in the glovebox I don't feel it releasing. The cable just feels dead/solid. Sad

So, are you saying that you are pulling on the cable, with say a pair of pliers, and it doesn't feel like it's moving?

Unfortunately some of the tricks to getting a stuck hood open do not work so well on Super Beetles. You may need to cut the hood handle. They are cheap and easy to find. Take your time, get a few new hacksaw blades and have at it.

good luck

Sore fingers and a bit of foul language later... The truck lid is now open!
Without cutting the handle. Laughing

Works fine if someone lubes the mechanism in the trunk at least once a decade. It's in the service information. One shouldn't expect a 40-year-old vehicle to work properly without proper care.
