Yeah it's from JC Whitney, but so far they're the only ones I've seen selling a 15x5 with this look. Anyone seen these in person? Anyone have a pic of them on their car OR problems putting them on a super beetle? |

Those do look good, don't they? I haven't seen them anywhere else. I am curious too. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

It's hard to tell by the pic, I looked under a few other VW websites and could not find these, the other oddball thing to mention is if I search for standard beetle on their site I find them, if I look for super (same year) it won't show them to me. Both have the same offset so what's the difference? I've never ordered anything from them other then wire or a speaker, I know the quality of other items they sale is bad. |

in talking with the live chat on their website she said the manufact lists the backspacing as 3.75" I've asked she confirm the bolt pattern. Is 3.75" a lot? thats like 95mm right? |

Super and Standard 4 bolts wheels are the same pattern, Checked CIP1 and got this for a stock type wheel

Personally, I think JCW is similar to many suppliers, they sell the cheap crap that many want because all they are looking for is a low price, but they also look like they have some good stuff too (Scat, Bugpack, etc). I suspect that these wheels will have the same prob that a lot of the aftermarket wheels do - they will want to rust at some of the seams. I am just guessing on this. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

In talking to the jc helpline I found the co that makes the wheels. If you go back to that site the picture changes. Also if you order straight from this site you get lugnuts and shipping for free.
Any thoughts on if they are a shame or not? |

I have owned two sets of these--one set I bought brand new and never really allowed them to be exposed to weather. The other set, however, I bought used from a samba advertiser and they were rusty and flaking-off chrome--I did not inquire as to what type of exposure they saw, as I was planning to blast and paint them, which I did. I *suspect* they'll probably rust just as fast as any other aftermarket chromed steel wheel.
I like them because they're unique. However, they also stick pretty far out when they're on the car...a look that eventually I got tired of. I'm back to stock wheels now--VW had it right all along...
P.S.: Be aware that the hubcaps these wheels use are not VW-type hubcaps--VW hub caps will *not* work with them.
P.P.S.: I used them on a stock '68 Standard Bug, 4-bolt, but I suspect they'd work on a Super Beetle also... _________________ Stock Steve

I found a pic in your gallery Stock Steve, of a wheel that looked close to what I was showing and you painted them, is that a pic of these rims?
What did you do with the other set? Still have them? |

For comparison: If the wheels are 5" wide, the over all width would be 6". With the backspacing at 3.75" the wheels would stick 2.25" off the bolt plain. They would stick out 1/4" less than a set of Empi's or Rivieras. Personally, I might consider running them on my car since it's a '65 on a '73 pan. That way I'd still have the smoothie look. |

Steve, you mentioned the caps were not a stock VW size, do you have shots of the painted rim with the caps or did you loose them before you painted them? Do you remember how far off from a beetle cap they were? I was wondering if a good metal fabricator could not "massage" stock caps into the correct size.
I think I still like them for the smoothie look, just wish I could find the set cheaper. |
