Those sheets, which sadly are stiff, combined with expanding foam as glue, with proper ventilation, is probably the best way to insulate just about anything, and since they don't have to be very thick to do their work (100mm - 150mm is what's needed to insulate a modern house wall here in Finland, and temps are known to drop as low as -30 C in the winter, bearing in mind that those specs are for houses constantly kept at +20C - +25C indoors with as little heat leakage as possible) you should be good with as little as 50-100mm. The only downside is that it's probably one of the most expensive types of insulation available, but it's still not as expensive as some sound-insulation sheets for cars... |
your crazy babel of metric speech has me confused...hahah j/k
i thought about this stuff before , and am thinking of using it in certain areas just seems very hard to work with, and it all come down to "r" value
is the "r" value that much higher than the bubble stuff? do you have photo's with your material being used does anybody? thanks! |
Sadly I've already plastered all the walls in my house that use this, but it's like a sheet made out of extremely rigid packing peanuts, it has almost no flexibility. Here's a pic of a pretty thick sheet, it's the yellow thing in the middle. It cuts easily with a normal saw, like one you would use for 2x4's... _________________

If anybody has luck buying this at a big box store please let us know. I need to find something that is easy to find, not very expensive, and won't piss me off if I want to take it out years from now. And I don't need the toxic fumes either I guess.
Lowes/HD only sells Reflectex via Internet order in all of the stores have way located in my area of the Twin Cities so I guess I'm screwed anyway. I don't know about you guys but the wife is more concerned about the $ I'm spending on the bus when packages mysteriously arrive vs a quick trip to HD. _________________ '75 Riviera |

It may depend on certain regions for each of the stores. I know that I have purchased the Peel and Seal at one Lowe's and visited another Lowe's in a different part of the state and they carried a different name, but same type product. _________________ tangerinemoons.com

i love people who make something sooo simple sounds soo hard, like getting trained for a job t a video store when i was in college, they made it seem as if it took some genius to check a movie out to someone, JEEZZ-USSS _________________ "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch.

hahah jerk! j/k though.
cheaper than refletix? it'll run you like $ 80 to do the whole bus with like 1.5 layers. i don't know about the peel and seal , i just picked up the reflectix stuff yesterday for 25 or 27 dollars a roll. if that's to expensive.
get a whole bunch of old blankets and pillows and crap stuff them in garbage bags (triple bag it) and chuck that in there. i can't see anything being cheaper than the reflectix stuff though.
i'm poor as well, but i found you can do a whole bus with 3 medium size rolls of the reflextix, if it takes you a week or 2 to get it all so be it i usually just do one roll @ a time. _________________ "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch.

Just an alternative idea that might be good for use in those hollow spaces and cavities in the bus...
How about the new DEMILEC (USA) non-toxic spray foam insulations such as SEALECTION® 500? Probably won't be cheap but it supposedly is able to expand and contract with the surface it is adhereing to. The open-celled foam seals out air, reduces extraneous noise and is thermally efficient. Water vapor can still pass through and evaporate so molds and rust don't grow. It's normally used in structures like metal buildings and etc. Oh yeah and it's also supposed to be "green" for those of us who might be environmentally friendly folk. _________________ 76 Westy

I did my insulating job bus last year.
1. Roof flashing tape - aluminium and asphalt (there was a link from a previous poster). All over the body on the inside, in the engine bay, on the roof. The difference was absolutely amazing. you could knock on the roof before you put it on and hear tinny echoes. After it was a dull clunk. great stuff. No issue in the engine bay, no smell after it goes on. I used a heat gun to seal it on each surface.
The bus is quiet enough to have a low conversation at 60mph
2. Actis multifoil (called the nasa bubblewrap stuff) - it has 15 layers, 5 foils and 10 closed cell sheets - like very thin bubblewrap. I have this on the roof, floor etc. but it is yet to go in to the sliding doors (twin sliding).
Have not been cold yet.....
3. Closed cell foam will go into the sliding door cavities, though it will be done when it is warm and dry and sealed up afterwards.
4. I have aftermarket HeX... which i am changing for the original ones after a re-furb. I want excess heat to help warm up after an atlantic surf, only 30degrees C (about 90F) inside will do!
Since this is my first post on theasmba, and i have been an avid fan of everything bay related on the samba for about a year now.... i thought i'd post a link to my resto pics, I am a member of type2ireland:

Good looking bus!!Now that you have the bus insulated well it is time to hop up the heating system: Make sure all controls open the heat exchanger; Insulate the heater pipe all the way from the accordian bellows foward witheither prrl and stick or bubble wrap. Some of the ares will be difficult but well worth itAND catch that wave _________________ 71 Westy, Quintilla 67 912 Porsche 67 SC currently in paint!! |

I'm going for 2 different directions.....
1st one is straight out of the Hex through the bulkhead and into the rear of the cab. The seccond is the stock direction, except through a lot of insulation.
I am expecting 200f out of the direct line in. It'll be hawaii in the rear! |

Finished my weekend Project. Peel n Stick'd the interior firewall and cargo area. MUCH quieter now, I can still hear the hummm of that classic VW engine, but can now hear my radio and passengers as well.
-Smell went away after about 2 days with the doors opened in the garage.
-Cleaned up & Used small heater to make sure metal was nice and warm to stick too.
