I need help, how can I know if my 1963 vw single cab is a 6 volt or 12 volt? It has no battery, but I saw the turn signal relay and it says 6v also the bosch regulator says 7v and it has a generator so maybe with those signs I'm guessing its a 6v. Can anyone help me, thnx

12V was only a relatively rare option prior to 1967, when it was made standard.

The system is basically determined by the components, so check your flasher relays and bulbs as well, but 99% sure it's 6V.

If the regulator is 7v then it should be a 6-volt vehicle.

You can look at the rating on the top of the generator too.

7 V (volts), and then something like 30A (amps). Sounds like you have a 6 volt system. Your light bulbs should all say 6V followed by various W (watt) readings.

Typically the 6v system had the voltage regulator mounted to the top of generator itself while the 12v systems had the voltage regulator mounted remotely somewhere else on the vehicle.

Pull a light bulb and look at the voltage spec on the bulb base.
