Are you running those on the street? Without a DOT stamp, you are looking at some hefty fines and possible impound if you are stopped. Also civil liability if you are in an accident. |

Fines, Impound....?..??? What country are you in? We just took a set of bighorns off the jeep we just bought, for no other reason than we couldn't justify such an aggresive tire on a mainly street driven vehicle..... No concern of fines or impound! Lol
That said, I cannot imagine how uncomfortable it would be to ride on those in such a light, small, vehicle..... Certainly the most aggresive I've ever seen on a Thing! Way to be different, Steve o!! _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

Well Joe, I just happen to be in the same country that you are in that adopted the Federal DOT standards over 45 years ago.
http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/fmvss/#SN110
In this economy with law enforcement budgets being cut, many departments seem to be increasing their "revenue enforcement." The OP's Thing is for his son. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to see a Florida cop pull a young kid over to check on these noisy UTV tires to generate a little revenue. Sad but true.
And the other issue of course that no one seems to want to talk about is the fact that you cannot predict when or if you will be in an accident. Now take a 40 year old car with drum brakes that doesn't stop incredibly well and add in a set of non-dot tractor tires and let a young, inexperienced kid drive it on wet, Florida roads. You just increased you chances that accident will happen in a car that isn't very safe to begin with. Yes they look cool, just not on the street. |

I have read so much on tires and wheels, my eyes are about to bleed. So may options. So many choices. Back to basics ...

"What is the stock tire size for a VW Thing?"... 185 SR14 M&S (with tube) |
What is this the equivalent to in today's sizing? 185-65x14? 165-85x14? Something else?

* * * * *
My Thing has 165-65x15 tires on it. The wheels look stock but are not 14-inch rims (obviously). They will probably have some letter code like "J" or "JK" on them. Is there a way to decipher this?
Stock Thing wheels seem hard to come by and far away. I want to weigh my options but knowing the above will help me move forward by either finding stock wheels or moving to a 15-inch rim that is maybe 5½ inches wide. (I can see about offset after that.) _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

Okay, let me ask a simple question with two follow-ups.
Will a 15 x 5.5 wheel with 3.75 back-spacing work on a Thing?
If yes, would there be any adjustments necessary and what would they be?
If yes for the wheel, what tire size would be best in keeping with a stock diameter? _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

Does anyone know the answer at least to this question?

The quote below is from January 2009. It gives me encouragement about the CIP chromies I listed above since the wheel listed above is a half-inch narrower. However, I haven't read anything definitive about minimum/maximum backspace/offset.

15" x 6" Aftermarket Chromies have about the same off-set as the factory Thing rims and work well, no rubbing, except with some tires at the front on the pan. Again the steering arm stops can be adjusted to prevent the pan rub. |

Great! Are/Were these on your Thing? Any rubbing or any concessions? What tire size(s) did you use/are you using?
Thanks! _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

Any luck finding out if the 3 3/4" back-spacing will work? I'd like to order these wheels if okay, or explore other options if not. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

I understand backspacing and offsets. I went through all of that when I put BBS wheels from a 2001 Jetta onto my '71 Super.
That's okay if no one knows the answer to any of my questions, or just the one single question I have reduced this process to in order to get to some sort of starting point. I'll find out somehow without going through the expense of trial and error. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

Sorry! I've been out west for a few days.. Totally slipped my mind before we left.
FYI, my wheel are 15x5.5, "Mengel" brand . Cheap, stock design with chrome!
I have the CPI 1 wide five disc brakes up front and have No issues with clearance. I didn't have to adjust anything with the steering either.
Don't recall my tire size, it's in my build thread somewhere! Lol
Patience my friend, I will check Our Thing when I get home on weds.... _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....
