I now have points triggering a FORD TFI ignition module. It is working better than I expected. |
Further stirring pot. Still running points/TFI module. Have not adjusted points going on one year. |
I'll help stir.... early 90s installed pertronix in a distributor. The distributor has been moved to several engines since and I've not bothered it! It triggers a Mallory now |
Both statements do not mean much without a statement of use. I have had points in a car for 10 years without touching them, but the car may have only driven 300 miles in that time period.
I have a pertronixs in my '73 Thing and have put 10,000 miles on it in the last 4 years without any problem.
I have points in my Manx that has had 8500 miles put on it in the last three months without a problem and will be driving it to the NC OBX in two weeks with the same points, another round trip of 1700 miles.
Stating I have always run this or that and no problems means nothing without also including how much use they have gotten in that time period. I bet I could pull out 20 used distributors out of a box I have and all have points in them, and all are at least 20 years old, and all could work just fine, but that does not mean they are the best choice because they lasted more than 20 years in my box. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Joe, couldn't tell you with accuracy. That module saw daily driver duties for ten years, and has been used for pleasure driving since. When daily use I drove all over Virginia, Maryland, and north Carolina with work. _________________

Bruce I disagree with both statements., no worries tho, to each their own.

Have you ever measured your points' resistance? It changes as they wear out. Noticeable in only a few thousand miles. _________________

About 10 years ago, I left home on a road trip with fresh points. Before I got home, the points were so bad, starting the car was very difficult. I bought the Pertronix so I wouldn't have to dick around with such trivial items while on a road trip. I prefer reliability over saving a few pennies.
Your points will start to degrade after only a few thousand miles. A Pertronix never degrades. |
-UPDATE-
Here's what happened to me just last week. I took off in my 67 bug to get some gasoline, on the way back car started bucking and running rough. I've only had the car about a month but it ran great up until this point. No pun intended.
As I was turning in the driveway it quit graveyard dead. When I isolated the problem troubleshooting it turned out to be a Petronix module which had gone bad all at once as they are known to do. Your neat little story from a few years ago came back to me as did this thread.
In your story your car ran bad but you did make it home with a points system .I would have been stranded without warning. Saving a few pennies you say , yes I'm saving more than pennies and possibly the cost of a tow. As I stated earlier if a person understands how to install and maintain a points system the reliability cannot be beat and it is cheaper.
|
Actually, on that road trip, I didn't "make it home" on the points that went bad.
The road trip started in Vancouver Canada, to Mexico City. On the way north, the car was running like crap in Phoenix. By the time I got to Stockton, the car would NOT start. Anyone in Cali knows it is not good to be stranded in Stockton.
Since installing the Pertronix, I have made 6-7 longer road trips without doing anything to the distributor. The last road trip was 15,000 miles. Try doing that with points and not touching them. _________________

No problems with my points in countless road trips and miles. Every time I threw the dwell meter on it they were always the same dwell, so if you have a good set of points keep them And I just use wheel bearing grease as the lube on the cam points, go figure _________________ Rick

I can buy at least ten sets of points which will last me a few hundred thousand miles and chances are I'll get an advance warning of impending failure instead of being being dead on the road. |
I'm gonna guess this is the car you bought from someone over here at the Eureka Springs show? At least you got it back home...
And what ever happened to that $10 replacement head you were going to send me?
That said, a ways back in this thread mentioned running electronic ignition so you can sit and listen to the radio without frying the points. Believe it or not that might be the #1 reason for me to actually consider switching _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

It's a lot easier to move the power wire to a constant hot so you don't need a key. _________________ Glenn

PSA- The points replacement module is not a true electronic ignition system. It too can be damaged if it is in a certain position at shutdown and the key is left on _________________
