So I yanked the door panels today and removed the handles and lock mechanisms to give them a good clean so my keys would work. I found the following link very helpful http://www.type2.com/rvanness/lock.htm as well as the Bentley book.

My cleaning tip has to do with the panels rather than the mechanisms. My wife decided to tackle it while I was fiddling with everything else.

Mr Clean Magic Eraser.

She got that shit looking brand new and barely broke a sweat doing it. I got the light grey color (alabaster) interior and they were pretty dingy before she got after them with that eraser.

As for the mechanisms, we just used hot soapy water and a toothbrush. She broke out some vinegar for some of the more gunkier stuff, but the key works like butter now so I call it a success.

Anyway, just here to praise the magic eraser.

They work great on headliners as well. One warning. DO NOT use them on black or otherwise dark surfaces. They will leave a dull gray dusty appearance. They are fantastic on lighter colored stuff though!

Back to the mechanisms for a moment. I soak mine in simple green overnight and use a stiff brush to get all the residual crap off. Then generous amounts of white lithium grease and they work like butter. This is one of those projects with big rewards.

For my door locks, I soaked them in white vinegar and lemon juice (with a hint of brake fluid) over night. Sprayed them down with brake cleaner and they were cleaner than ever.

I did the same with an old carb, tore it down and soaked it overnight. Residue will stay if you don't spray it off quickly though.

I like the blue can electrical contact cleaner. For everything from my Westy Jalousie mechanisms to door mechanisms. It evaporates fast is safe on plastic and does a great job of cleaning out the crud. My window mechanisms are butter smooth as are all the locks after a healthy slather of white lithium.
