All of my friends with big performance bugs also use the aftermarket breather boxes and vent the valve covers. I don't really understand why. Piston movement up and down is counteracted by opposing pistons. Seems like tho only air needing bleeding out of the case would be ring blowby and valve guides leaking. Seems like that would mainly be due to a worn out engine or one where the rings wern't broken in yet. Didn't you also run into leak issues at the cylinder bases and also pushrod tubes on another engine? There is hardly any air movement when I remove the filler cap. Evidently very little blowby.
The stock breather/fillers have the road draft tube plus the breather line to the oil bath. On wornout engines you can watch the oily vapors comming out the road draft tube. But I sure like my aftermarket filler. No problems but it has advantages. _________________ The best thing that anyone can do for their Bay is get the Volkswagen of America Official Service Manual published by Robert Bentley. Yes, I did have problems with a different engine leaking and that turned out to be from poor breather volume as well.
Both of those engine weren't yet broken in so they probably did have excessive ring blow by. I've been down this road before with problems caused by not enough breather volume. It took me quite a while and a lot of work before I figured it out. I'm just trying to help the next guy avoid some self induced oil leaks. _________________ Licensed Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic

Late to the party getting these pics posted. Better late than never!
Finished this build last October. Three days after installation, we drove it to Florida! I've got about 6,000 miles on the rebuild.
This engine features a Raby 9550 cam. I used his upgraded valvetrain kit, 42x36 valves. Mahle 94 mm P & C's (from Raby), porsche swivel adjusters, 72-74 HE's and tangerine exhaust (from Raby). My German heads were sent to Adrian at HeadflowMasters. He used the hardware purchased from Jake to rebuild the heads.
My C/R is 7.7 - 1. Deck height is .055".
The engine runs like a champ. I have a small oil leak I've yet to detect its origin. Otherwise, my head temps have never gone over 360 degrees. Oil pressure runs around 40 psi when fully warm running 70 ish down the highway. Oil temps range in the 220's, but have seen 235 degrees. Using a type 1 Shadek modified oil pump, and Brad Penn 20w 50 racing oil. _________________ ...make good money five dollars a day...

^^^ Inspiring addition to this thread. Thanks for that! I hope to pull this off someday when my engine needs it. I always say to myself, "Hey, if he can do it, so can I", but I know it's not always as easy as that. _________________ 1978 Sage Green Westfalia

Trsut me, Buster, if I can do it, you most certainly can, too. I did have some help, I will not lie. I run a golf course, and my mechanic was helpful. Especially with the valvetrain geometry work. That's tedious and tough. _________________ ...make good money five dollars a day...

Probably a brand new GEX motor that had the distributor drive installed 180 out and in the process of trying but NOT fixing the PO buggered up the brass gear so bad it probably never had a chance. After he let it season uncovered in the backyard for a year or so I had the pleasure of adopting it. I did not know 180 out back then, boy do I now. So anyways, last Thanksgiving, since everyone was down to celebrate anyways, myself and the rest of the males in the clan, both replaced the brass gear on a bedsheet on the driveway as per the Haynes, Bently, and Muir. Whichever was easiest. Oh, Tom Wilson was there too. So, now it has half a chance. And thats only a chapter in this manuscript. If it gets me back and forth to the dogpark while I work on the bus it will have served its purpose. Yesterday it ran for about ten or fifteen minutes. Next weekend I'll try to dial it in. I am learning. I think my eyes are open now. The Original one will be much, much, better. I see Rimco in my future. Don't tell the Little Lady. Wouldn't want to scare her. But. I'm not done yet... Especially with this one. Fun Times.

Thanks Gary, I'm ready to kick Mona Lisa to the curb so she can show me if she has any skills. I know now that to make them pretty, is pretty mindless. I can do mindless. All Day, Every Day. From 5am until Midnight. That's Easy. The hard part still lies ahead. I have learned so much on this one, and have so much left to learn that I have trouble falling asleep. I can't shut it off. |
