how has that setup lasted over the years? the mufflers of these cheaper exhausts are always the first to go, and I to have thought about just getting a nice Magnaflow welded to it... |

what all did you end up doing to it? |
It hadn't been tagged nearly a decade before I bought it, runs strong but was leaky (intake & oil) and kept having reliability issues. I re-dressed it with all new sensors, seals, gaskets, grommets, o-rings, hoses, clamps, ignition.. the only big change was swapping out the 009 ditsy and putting in a Bosh SVDA w/Pertronix... all thanks to BusDepot
alot more was done while the engine was out, here's the thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=512873 _________________ 2013 4dr Golf TDI w/Technology & Tow pkg

Here's mine. 71 stock 1600DP, Empi 34"s, and a fancy shmancy lace paint job.

I thought my throttle return spring looked like a kludge, but I see a lot of photos of similar setups in this thread.

That's correct for a plastic airfilter bus, there's even a little nylon grommet in the decklid hinge crossmember for the spring to hook into. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Not if Dad's is a 72, they use a special coil bracket with an arm to hook the spring on, completely different linkage too. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Looks like you are missing some things, but it does look pretty so far.
Spark plug wire plastic and metal hold down bits, Timing/flywheel hole cover, for the heater tube grommet that is nla you can use a flex pipe coupler from the hardware store ( rubber things for joining plumbing pipes).
The carb linkage looks like it's ready to bind. I've made spacers to bring the linkage arm throw bolts (?) out so the rod ends can go straight and symmetrically down. It would be nice if someone would offer such a thing pre-made.
While I'm at it, you will be much happier if you regulate the fuel pressure, and I hope you will be securing the fuel lines, probably would be best to use other hose clamps, too.
I guess I would plug the holes behind the heater tube hole, too. I'm wondering if the straight barb by the coil on the fan housing has been sawed off?
Finally , it looks like you will saw through your firewall tin with your throttle cable. |

All taken care of after it went in Except for the carb linkage spacers you mentioned....is there a pic of that anywhere on here that I could see what you're talking about? I found that it DID bind a bit before I tightened everything up, but once tight, the action seems to be quite good....but I can understand your point about getting those rods more vertical.
EDIT: Nevermind about the pic....I found a pic in your gallery where you can see the right one. Good idea. _________________ '73 Pop Top Camper

I made them out of aluminum. They have to be different lengths, at least for the Dellortos I'm running. You can see the hardware store heater tube plug action, too. It is just a bit messy in there with the fuel pump relay and the fan wires. For the firewall throttle cable you can see just a bit of the aluminum L brackets that I have holding up a marine sheeve I'm using to redirect.
