Hi all, I've got a 77 bus with the stock 2.0 liter and was wondering how important the EGR system is. Soon after rebuilding the engine the EGR valve began leaking causing it to idle rough so I blocked it off. It runs fine but that part is there for a reason.
Just wondering |

| The EGR is an emissions part that should have no impact on how the bus is running. Unless it is leaking as you have learned. If you still have the catalytic converter in place then you need the EGR or you will probably foul the converter which will cause more problems. If you don't have the catalytic converter then blocking the EGR valve and stopping the vacuum leak is a good idea. |

Go Kayaking is right-the egr valve won't affect performance if disconnected.
The cat is another issue though- Egr valves lower oxides of Nitrogen(a main component of smog)The cat simply burns unburnt hydrocarbons. There is no correlation between the two.Unless you have emission testing there should be no problems. |
