I replaced the shift coupler at the front of the transmission today. Wow, what a difference. I had to use the original pin and bolt, as the one in the BD kit was not round, and wouldn't tighten up very well. The downside is, now I am having trouble getting into second gear. It sometimes would go, and other times it would slide into fourth. Would I make this adjustment with the shift plate up front? Made the drive home interesting as I couldn't really downshift into second or first. _________________ http://www.airriders.ca/phpBB2/

Took my engine in to be rebuilt after sucking in the exhaust valve on #4 cylinder. Not a pretty sight!
Hopefully the case can be saved!!! _________________ 77 Westy named Tiki - Daily Driver 80 miles a day!

Bummer, what does the valve stem look like?
You need one of these.

Here are some pictures of the valve stem that you asked for
As for the stand, right now I am using this. I need to go back and rotate the backing plate so the starter will clear the plate. Then I can run engine out of the bus.
That and drill and add a few more bolts for peace of mind. But waiting to get my drills back from my brother first _________________ 77 Westy named Tiki - Daily Driver 80 miles a day!

Nice yoke. Be sure to strap that stand down when you fire the engine. Years ago. Me and a friend of mine fired a small block Chevy on a tire. Everything was fine until my buddy blipped the throttle. The torque flipped the motor on its side. Luckily he was in front of it.
Good Luck |

I put in a slightly bigger fire extinguisher with a guage on it.
The not sure how old ext. without guage: This was not re-mounted, but put in the little cubby in the back for now.
Slightly bigger with guage:

filled the ole bus up with ethanol free gas. Might just be in my head, but it sure does make the bus run a lot smoother.... _________________ Rich

Well I did not do this to my bus....It was a blind tow truck driver. He scraped along the drivers side of the "blue wave". The "scratch" is about 3 inches deep and bent the support beam. It brought a tear to my eye when I saw it. I am glad the driver stopped and we exchanged info. Insurance will fix it but i am worried that they wont be able to fix it with original parts. I dont even know if that is possible. Is it? Does anyone make repro side panels? not sure if that is what they are called. |

Not to make the pain any less, but that's not a site prone to rotting so you may have good luck getting a used panel off from a donor bus.
That way you know it's better quality metal than whatever flat stock might be procured. _________________ Mike

Made it to and from Flagstaff safely, only losing a set on points a few miles away from home. The bus ran great, and it looks like I got excellent mileage (I'll figure it out later). A very fun time at the Flagstaff KOA with a ton of VW folks. I did a quick scan through the 600+ photos, and really like what I took. Stay tuned later this week for photos on http://ericarnoldphotography.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/EricArnoldPhotography

New seat covers, window crank knobs, and door handles. New seals all around and a very sexy, faux leather, vegan steering wheel cover. New windshield on Thursday too.

On top of aesthetics for old Dante I just had the engine rebuilt. Heads were redone. New heater boxes (they aint cheap). Refurbished alternator. New/used rebuilt transmission to match the 2.0 litre engine. Finding parts for my older auto transmission was a nightmare. Fuel tank was fixed so no more smell. Brakes repaired.
This weekend we're installing a 100 amp hour aux battery that is charged via alternator, shore power and solar. Buying a portable, folding 120 watt solar kit.
I just wish I had the dosh for new tires and to take care of some rust issues. Soon though. In 3 weeks I'm off to the Badlands, Black Hills and Yellowstone. Can't wait to roll. _________________ ============================

May want to have SGKent chime in. If I recall correctly, he had this panel replaced on his bus.
Ah, yes here they are. Some pictures of his bus
