After putting the engine into the '72 last weekend and putting about 80 miles on it, a pushrod tube seal squished out into the rocker box causing an oil leak. So I pulled the engine/tranny again yesterday. [email protected] said the tubes were to long causing the squish and recommended 40hp tubes. Placed an order, now just waiting for parts. |

Here it is
The temp switch under stearing column
Used this pump ziptied under the reservour and replaced all the crusty hoses
Will install next to emergency flashers
This oem switch donated by Jose Gonzalez bus guru in Ozark AL
And will replace the knob with this one
Thoughts?

^^^ Pretty cool idea. All you need now is some sort of stick down the front to block those drawers from sliding open during a quick stop. _________________ nothing |

I got rid of all the separate fuse holders I had in the engine compartment and made a block to hold ATC fuses.

Thanks.
Yeah the ground does look bad but the wire is just bent down. The ground is only for my engine compartment lights. _________________ 75 Westy "Vanna", 2.0 with hydraulic lifters and Freeway Flyer Transaxle

Did you used to get 20+ with your engine? I remember the AZ trip thread being low, but I can't remember what you had before.
I almost cooked my engine coming out of Ghila Bend last month with a vacuum leak… 26.6 mpg!! _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

The best mpg I've ever got so far has been 20.6. That was on a return trip of only 100 miles from camping, all on secondary roads and no interstates. I got only 16.8 going to the campground which is consistent with all my other mpg's that I get. The total trip would be 18.7. My normal average on long trips of 700 to 3500 miles has been 17.4. But here's the kicker. This avg 18.7 is the first trip I've taken with my new freeway flier tranny. I'm going on another 200 mile trip which has 40 miles of interstate and the rest is secondary roads. I'll post my mpg for this trip when I return. |
There's a dedicated thread for this discussion- perhaps we should migrate this discussion there. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

I was useing Kadrons on the engine when it was first built, I was getting 21 with them. Not the case with the Weber IDF 40s, Only got 16 mpg on the Tucson trip. The engine does run a lot smoother with the Webers. I will fill up today, I'm gonna be useing a tank this weekend driving to the mtb trails to ride. I'll repost on the MPG thread my results.
BTW, 26.6 is crazy for that 1600. Best I saw was 22 with my 1600. _________________ __________

It was a nasty vacuum leak that only showed up under high RPM running. No engine should be subjected to running that lean, ever, but I was hundreds of miles from home with a deadline. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

Drove it to work last night...hate not having a working defroster and freezing rain on my drive! Had to pull over and scrape the ice 3 times on my 18 mile drive.

Why is the defrost not working? Have you checked the booster fan fuse in rear? _________________ Special Thanks to:

My lovely wife stitched a new canvas for the front child cot, today we installed it to test fit. The future owner of the Westy is trying it out.

I like the "Frig" fuse. I always wondered how to properly "Frig" up an electrical system.. Friggen thing......
Now you need one to protect the Fridge. hehehe _________________ 1974 VW Westfailia Campmobile Deluxe (Clementine)

I also have a great frig. We have a Norcold marine type that runs like a normal frig. It has a 12 volt compressor and we have run it for 4 days solid on battery. _________________ 75 Westy "Vanna", 2.0 with hydraulic lifters and Freeway Flyer Transaxle
