Today I started preparing for our trip to Cali. I emptied it rear facing seat storage compartment, you'd be amazed the amout of stuff you can fit in there.
I emptied it so I could install a seat belt and move the baby seat here for our trip. This will not be his permanent spot but it will allow us to have the bed open for the whole trip.

Busy day today.
-Installed a engine compartment seal (old one was turning to dust). It wasn't as big as a hassle as I thought it would be.
-Adjusted rear brakes and parking brake.
-Installed new front shift rod bushing, greased shifter coupling, totally cleaned front shift rod and adjusted shifting plate.
-Changed oil.
-Drove it. _________________ Justin

as motor on my "new" '77 2L bay was cranking but not igniting I decided to change the sparkies. Now she doesn't crank at all. Came in out of the rain before I took a hammer to the engine...
.... and now trying to relax with beer in hand |

Drove it 732 miles from Las Vegas, around Southern California, and back. I attended the 2014 Blackstar Campout, OCTO, and the new El Prado 'VWs in the Meadow' shows, plus a bonus photoshoot.
Here are the photos from Blackstar; photos from the other events will be ready soon.

Installed new front door seals on the jellybean, and learned a couple valuable lessons. First, don't buy the cheap Vw Brazil seals. They were a bit too long and don't fit very well. Second, 3m may be make great products, their packaging leaves a lot to be desired. The nozzle on the fresh tube of adhesive was gummed up, but the bottom of the tube opened all on its own really easily. What a mess! _________________ http://www.airriders.ca/phpBB2/

Did you get different seals, or modify the Brazilian version? _________________ nothing |

I carefully compressed the rubber as I glued and taped it in place. Later on down the road I will install the better quality rubbers. For now, it no longer rains in on me when I drive in the wet. _________________ http://www.airriders.ca/phpBB2/

Today I spent some more time getting the bus ready for our trip to Cali. I adjusted the valves. 1 & 2 were good, 4 intake and both valves on 3 were loose . I took the time to paint the valve covers while they were off and installed wil new cork gaskets. I changed the oil, installed new wiper blades, adjusted the brakes . I pulled the pan and inspected the throttle cable, clutch cable and the front shift bushing. Everything looked good and we're ready for Cali!!! We are hitting the road in Friday. _________________ __________

I rarely have anything of value to add to this thread, but yesterday I finally got my motor mounted up in the bus! A ways to go now, but making progress

After replacing the rubber seals and trating the rust in the window channels on all but thedriver and passenger front windows, I had a lot of POR 15 showing around the rubber seals where I dealt with rust. Today my son and I did some touch up work around the windows...seems to have come out pretty well. Next week we'll polish and wx the whole vehicle and see how it all blends together.

Two weeks ago my bus had an engine in it. This is what happened to that engine since then.
So far the only problem issues I'll have to address are the pistons and cylinders are out of tolerance. Everything else so far looks to be in excellent condition.
This is my first air cooled rebuild. I've only ever done two other rebuilds so I'm still apprehensive any time this happens! Wish me luck! |

We were finally able to get a motor built and installed in her '71 westy. We got a 1776 built with dual empi carbs. The transmission turned out not to be the original one but a 6 rib trans. The builder said it was a good transmission. He ended up doing the rear cv's and brakes. We got it home and have redone the fronts with new rotors, pads and rebuilding the calipers. Now we are just working on the electrical. Found a couple bad fuses but now the brake lights do not work. They worked yesterday while bleeding the brakes but now nothing. We are going to buy all new fuses for the thing. Hope to be able to put the rear bumper back on, mount up some usable tires up front and she should be able to take it out. The thing sat for almost 10 years in a building waiting to get out. The next thing is painting the top and installing the new tent. She says from what she read it is not hard. Just looking at it I think I may come up with some new bad words. |

Disassembled the bumpers and removed (read: Grinded) all the carriage bolts and replaced them with stainless steel. Bumper guards removed. The guards that were on my American '71 Deluxe were fat and have a "VWoA" stamp at the base of the rubber fascia strips. Now I'll need to get the bumpers repainted.
Reseated the exhaust header connection to the phatboy which was loud again. Now it's much nicer and less loud (no more crying neighbor babies and car alarms when driving downtown Seattle).
Removed the $68 amber rusty (4yrs old) chrome fogs and put the amber casings into the old stainless steel louvered fog lamps acquired from electronic bay some time ago. This might just work! Need a bolt flange to get them mounted on bumper since they're so deep.
Was going to use a set of hella headlight buckets acquired from here but the screws were all threaded and it was pretty worse for wear. Dropped some coin on new oe quality buckets and German headlight rings so the new Bosch h4s will sit comfortably safe.
She's running a dream. _________________ ‘71 sunroof "Sandy" http://luxb.us
