I have a 71 bus. I'm about to buy two 12 inch speakers and an amp. With my current smaller system, the lights already are dim. Is there anyway i could install a seperate battery just for the speakers? Does anyone know any solutions? thanks!

search past threads in this forum- there has recently been some discussion about adding auxiliary power- try the "second batter install" thread a little farther down this page.

you can install what is called a capacitor. the capacitor stores the voltage from the battery in it and uses that to run the system and not the battery. adding an extra battery will probably not any good. it will drain that battery too. you need a capacitor that is at least one (1) farad. i am assuming that the lights dim when the bass hits? jeff

Jeff, thanks. Yes the lights dim when the bass hits. How much will a good capacitor cost? Is there a big difference between expensive and cheap ones? Thanks!

What kind of system do you have anyway? Just throw an alternator in there and don't worry about everything else. I converted my 71 and am happy with it. A good capacitor costs money. Look here for one:

even with an alternator a large enough system will drain and ruin it and the battery. i have had stereos in modern vehicles that would drain the alternator and ruin the battery. the alternator is not made to charge a dead battery it keeps it topped off. a good capacitor will probably run you around 100 bucks. seems high, but compared to the alternate it is not bad. it is the ONLY thing that will FIX your problem. they make them with digital read outs but it is not neccessary. crutchfield is a very good company, but shop around. good luck. jeff
