|
|
I'm looking at buying a bus that has Porsche disk brakes on the front of it. So to keep the brakes on it, I need to find a 15" wheel to use. I really don't like the current 17" wheels that are on it.
So whats available? I'd like to find a repro set because this just going to be a driver.
Fuch, Cosmic, Gas Burners..... I like the torque thrust but not sure if there available in a aftermarket with a Porsche bolt pattern. What about a later stock Posche 15" wheel, before they used the Fuch wheels?
I've talked to Nate at Wagens West and he has adapters so I could go from Porsche pattern to wide 5 but I don't know if the adapter will clear the caliper. Anyone done this? |

I just bought 944 brakes & adapters from Greg @ Vintage Warehouse, to change to wide 5 when I swap my Fuchs out for a set of wide 5 wheels. I havnt run the adapter yet, But Greg says with a bit of clearancing it can definatly be done. |

Hit up ebay and search for Porsche wheels.
You'll find a lot of options
Check out your disk kit too. Some won't work with 15" wheels..... |

I seen Rich50's set and they got me thinking. Does anyone repro those? I don't need a real set.

That is what I was thinking. I'm going to have to come off some cash to get them. |

whats wrong with the options you already listed if your wanting something readily available. you can't have readily available and unique. since we in the same region about the closest you could come to both would be repop gas burners. less common in this area than other porsche wheels. Cip1 has the chrome flat4 "early" fuchs reps for $220 each. you actually are about a week late as they had a 10% off deal that just ran out. you coulda had a set at your door for around $900.
theres always other porsche wheels such as teledials, cups, etc. hell i almost bought a set of polished cookiecutters that are local to me because their cheap and you rarely see them. i don't normally like them but polished or chromed they ain't bad. maybe thats just the 80s coming back outta me hahaha. i decide against it since i was considering them for a project thats a 4 lug and i got something in that pattern from a porsche(mahle baby gas burners) for the square.
i'd say work with what you've got if it's there....ken.... _________________ ITMC

The last two get togethers;thats all I saw!

The reason I asked the question is that I don't like most Porsche wheels. I like Cosmics and Fuchs but Fuchs seem to be on alot of cars and I don't want the same as everyone else. I would like to change it back to wide 5 wheels so I could run the stock wteel wheels. I'll probably take my tax return and buy a set of Cosmics, if I can find some. |

i guess we attend different "get togethers". i know of one car around here that "supposedly" has gas burners but has yet to make an appearance. i know a few of the florida folks have them but fl is a good ways away from va.
i'm still of the mindset of run whatever the hell wheels you like. the likelyness of having something no one else has is slim. if thats the goal rj's DSRs would have been the best bet for that. cosmics aren't far behind but there are at least several sets of those around the US. NSUs are cool and obscure but may not fit over most disc kits(though my 14x5.5 fuchs would most). Empi 5s have been played out for years but you can't deny they damn well just look good....ken.... _________________ ITMC

Yeah I seen those. But one problem is that the bus has a 5" narrowed beam and the rear has been narrowed 1" so I think a 4.5 wide rear wheel wouldn't look right. I think a set of 8.5 repro Fuch might do the trick or a 8.5 sprintstar, if I can get the wide 5 adapters to work. |

yeah narrowed front and rear 4.5 might look a bit goofy. if they are the style your after you could always have them rehooped with whatever width hoops you wanted. i haven't had any done in a long time but it's not that hard and i think i paid less than $100 for the 2 last 2 i did have done. if your a good welder or know someone who is all it will cost you is the wheels. i used to have a tech from a hot rod board that showed you how to do it and could dig it up again i'm sure if needed. the best thing about doing rehoops is you can not only play with wider hoops but you can tweak the offset to your liking at the same time.
the other option would be to run them as is with a spacer behind them to push them out a bit. you can easily find spacers in porsche pattern on flea bay from 1/4 to 2in. you'd still be limited by how wide a tire you can go on a 4.5 wheel though...ken.... _________________ ITMC
