I want to use stock wide 5 steels, but if i ever wanted to change the steels out for say BRM's or something else. Would i have a problem with tire rub if the front is narrowed, say 5-6 inches? Those are number's i jsut came up with in reality i have no idea how low it will be, but i would like the option to go as low as i want. Any help is much appreciated. Very Happy

You'd be better off with an 8" beam,or even a 9".
6.5"beams are the norm now Cool
Check out the pics of GermanPride's 58;his is still too high but will give you an idea of how your bug will look lowered on a 6" beam Wink

Yeah, lemme go put it on the skid pad and get back to you.

You think any of these cars with 165s or smaller up front can turn for anything?

This thing is a toy for me.

thats crazy talk. i personally dont like bouncing around the road because i cant run shocks.

I've always thought 4" was plenty unless you want a hardcore hammerhead look (and like bouncing around).

I don't think I've ever seen a narrowed beam for sale that was not adjustable.

I had a five inch on one of my old cars and it was not bouncy at all! You would have never known there were not any shocks under it.

In answering the original post. If you run a 5 or 6" beam with stocks, you will not have a problem bolting up a set of said BRMs. You will have more rubbing issues (on the inner fender) with the stocks than with any other aftermarket wheel. It's all about the backspacing.

If you have urethane bushings, you don't need shocks. But with the stock needle bearings, with shocks, you will be in for a seriously sketchy bouncy ride...

No shocks, you have to have urethane bushings.

Narried beams are dangerous!!!! Shocked

I have a 4" in my car and hate it with stock wheels, it ISNT narrow enough. My wheels rub the fender before they rub the inner.

5 or 6 is perfect with the right wheels. You could always go 5.5 and have the best of both worlds.

Of course the 8" beam in my ghia with Sprints turns lock to lock. Very Happy

It helps to know what rims your going to run before the beam work. Overall 6 inch will usually do the job.

I was planning on going with regular 15 inch steels, and possibly switch to BRMs if i felt they might look b etter down the road. On the other hand if someone would sell some 16 or even 17 inch radars in the states, those would be the wheels of my choice....But it's looking like steels for now.

EDIT: forgot to add, does anyone like CB performance or online sell a 6 inch narrowed beam or do i have to make it on my own? (think i asked this already?)

Your best bet for an over the counter 6" beam would be like Franklins VW Werks, KCW, Airkewld, Jer-Fab, or Ridemaster (I think they are still around). They are some of the shops off the top of my head.

There's always narrowed beams listed in the classifieds. I got a 4" from Keoki. Great work, I'm very happy with it. The shock towers are flexible in/out, but solid with the stroke of the shocks.

Running 17" BRMS, CB dropped spindles, discs, stock (Austrian aftermarket) steel fenders, stock body, and no rubbing, with one adjuster about mid range, the other removed, although the car is still just a roller awaiting paint and reassembly. I pulled the bottom adjuster to check clearance at ride height during body work. Keoki indexed the adjusters for use with dropped spindles so it wouldn't sit low enough as a bare shell without removing the adjuster.

Keoki makes great beams and offers 5" and 6", with adjusters but no shock towers.
