Years ago, I went to 16" CLK's along with keeping the spare 16" in its original location. The tire has always rubbed against the steering connecting shaft. I remember reading the Syncro 16 had a tube around its shaft to stop the rubbing. Does anyone have any information regarding the tube, maybe an image or thoughts?

I believe you're thinking of the shift rod protection tube included on the later model Syncros to protect the rod from getting encumbered with snow and ice when driving through deep snow.
Shown here on the left.
As far as I remember the 16" Syncro didn't have any additional protection around the steering shaft.
However I could be wrong, the 16" I owned had a bash guard in place of the clamshell and a rear tire carrier. _________________ Currently:

I believe Van Cafe had a steering shaft shield on their website to compliment their modified spare tire carrier. _________________ ☮️ |

Nothing for a Syncro, perhaps I'll make my own. _________________ '87 Syncro Weekender |

Incorrect, the spare was mounted elsewhere. |

Apologies, I'm mistaken. Perhaps the article referenced a modification to a Syncro 16... _________________ '87 Syncro Weekender |

I cut about 5 inches out of mine and slid a piece of round rod inside and had it re welded. Gives you just enough room.

Thank you! I wonder if this will be made available again...but at the very least, a picture gives some thought to fabricating one. _________________ '87 Syncro Weekender |

Interesting, do you happen to have an image for me to reference?

Agreed you don’t need much. A smaller diameter shaft would do it, plus the mechanical advantage of the smaller diameter further reduces steering friction. I bet a sold shaft with a plastic sleeve on it would be the best. Or getting carried away…..maybe a solid shaft with a stack of 10 needle bearings slid over it before welding.
A plastic sleeve over the polished & greased steering shaft (at the top of the pic).
This is thick-wall (200psi ABS pipe) in the pic.
I have since removed that thick wall pipe and changed to thinwall (100 psi irrigation pipe) which was easy to snap on.
I don’t feel any resistance in the steering.

Also look a few posts prior, theres pics. _________________
