Hi,

This is one of those often asked questions.

No bushing until 1960

UNLESS your guide broke off at some point and a newer style was welded on by the PO.

Do a search, you'll find pictures of the old style guide in this forum

Hello-

I just replaced my early shifter bracket with a later model. I wasn't sure it would be worth the effort, but in the end, I'm very glad I did it. I can finally downshift!

Thanks,

Paul

So, if you have the older style there was nothing there at all? Just the bracket. Mines the original I think as where the bush goes on the newer ones its flat but mine has the bell entry like the one in the picture from what I can feel in the tunnel. Can the brackets becomes worn just from the shift road passing through it and then subsequently need replacing or is there a way to repair a slightly widened hole?

This is a good question.

Should there be any play at all in the rod passing through the bracket or should it be a really tight fit?

Pretty sure it was June of 1960, so the Earlier '60 Beetles didn't have one either.
I know my January '60 doesn't have one.
