|
|
I'm throwing this out there in the hopes that a Samba brother or sister has experience in this area. I have an fuel oil home heating system...Energy Kinetics System 2000.
The exhaust system uses a fan to move exhaust. The fan is on it's last leg...it make a terrible noise when running...as if the fan blades were hitting the housing. I suspect the bearing in the fan is shot.
I have a few questions...
1. What do you call this fan? I want to do an online search but I don't know the term(s) used to describe this thing in order to get meaningful results.
2. Do they make a rebuild kit? Or do I have to buy the entire thing?
3. Anyone care to estimate the cost of a fan like this?
4. Installation looks simple, are there any hidden difficulties?
Thanks. |

looks to me like it just an a/c voltage blower fan. Either take it off and in to an electric motor shop for replacement or repair or look at its tag with its hp/rating/watts/direction it turns and so on and check one of the big wearhouse places like ww.granger to get a replacement motor. But take it out of its housing and see whats wrong with it first...
edit:Do shut the power off first... |

You should see if there is a "data tag" or "data plate" on the motor. It looks like a power venter of some sort. On the label there should be a model number and probably a name brand. Write those both down and google search them. Most companies websites will have a local reps number or where to buy their products.
thanks, JV |

Okay...good advice guys. I'll climb up there and check it out more closely.
This project is going to require some good timing. Its not getting much above 35*F and I can't have the heat off for too long. |

| Check that ww. granger online site with your numbers looks like theres a pretty good selection 300 motors or more and a cross over for different brands of motors. You may be able to order one without ever taking yours in to a shop. But Id still check the fan or impeller to make sure its not just loose or damaged... |

Hey, thanks. These words just saved me some time and money.
I climbed up the ladder and took a close look. I took the fan out of the housing and here is what I found.
1 - The "squirrel cage" was nearly clogged with soot.
2- The build up of soot caused the fan to be out of balance.
3- The out of balance fan vibration caused some of the mounting hardware to work loose.
4 - And the loose hardware caused the various parts to rattle against each other making all the racket.
The fix? I cleaned out the squirrel cage and tightened the hardware. And hell yeah! This mother fu*ker is whisper fu*king quiet!
I try to be a dilligent DIY'er, but the fact is that damn thing had me intimidated.
Thanks again! |

Good job Firebug, I do HVAC work for a lining and have never seen a unit like that on an oil fired boiler. I'm not saying it's wrong but make sure there is some kind of safety switch that will shut off the burner in case the fan stops for whatever reason. I have been to homes that had the venter fail and the burner continued to run, smoking up the house, putting soot over walls, floors, and furniture. Not to mention odor and CO. Usually there is a piec e of 1/4" alum. tubing stuck into the vent pipe near the venter fan that then goes to a pressure switch ( small metal cat food can sized thing) with 2 wires going to it. This senses pressure drop and should shut off the burner in event of fan failure. You can test this by getting the burner going and then killing power to the venter or disconnecting the aluminum tubing from the pressure switch. A common power venter is a Fields SWG-4, this unit has the fan outside on the end of the vent pipe so it in effect "sucks" gases out instead of blowing.

| It is called either a draft inducer blower or a side wall vent kit. |
