i bought the bugpack header with single quietpac. will i have to modify the quietpac to clear the bumper and apron? the bus will be low also, but not scrapping low. |

I had to bend mine down since I did not want to cut my apron. Depending on how low you are depends on if it will scrape or not. I am pretty low and only have about an inch or two clearance. _________________ Like a midget at a urinal, I'm always on my toes

Haha... Ive gone through three quietpacks in my bus now. I always bust the bottoms out in no time.
I built a new stainless Borla muffler at work, but I just did it all guesswork, AT work without any measurements..... It fits on my bus fairly nice, but the small turnout I put from the muffler can is lower than my quietpack was.
Needless to say, I plan to do some measuring this time and make another.... _________________ • Metal Fab & Quality Suspensions, Type I-II-III. Since 2004 • |

Go with the stock bus muffler and dampner tube. |
If you've got a stock engine, then I'll agree with this, hands down. You can't really put a stock exhaust on a performance engine, though. |
X2. Stock is DEF. the way to go for clearance in a bus OR beetle, but like Andrew said, big motors are another issue. _________________ • Metal Fab & Quality Suspensions, Type I-II-III. Since 2004 • |

i'm about to add dual ICTs, 1.4 ratio rockers, header with single quietpac exhaust, SVDA, petronix to my stock 1600 singleport. it already has external oil cooler and fiflter along with stock doghouse setup. i'll take out the stock screen since the filter works much better. i'll check today to make sure it has all the tin and when i take off the fanshroud i'll check for the stock thermostat setup as well. there's no way i'll ever put a stock exhaust on. way too restrive. i like being low but never slow. if it scapes then i'll raise it up a little, same for the steering box. |

Got a hole in my Thunderbird muffler from dragging it while backing out of a driveway. (I lowered the bus some more since my first post)
Chrome damper pipe support did not allow exhaust pipe to fit too well
Tilted too much, and tip sticks too far out past the bumper
I left it off, and bolted these two tabs together. This allowed me to bend and set the exhaust tip where I wanted it. Level, and not sticking too far out.
What matters most!!!!
I was surprised that is sounded the same as the single quietpack when driving inside the bus. _________________

i got this from autozone, cherry bomb chamber muffler.
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Cherrybomb-...9292_1719_
$20 is a great price, about the same size as a hideaway muffler. i'll get it
mounted like a hideaway but with enough room to adjust my valves and
exiting in front of the passenger rear wheel. once its done i'll post pics. it
says its aluminized, but i still sprayed it with 2000deg exhaust paint. |

heres some pics of my new muffler setup. the engine runs soo much
better now, feels much more responsive. seems like i gained 10hp!
the muffler is from autozone, cherrybomb turbo for $20.
the local muffler shop installed it and replaced my fuel line from the tank
to the engine for $150 total.
the pipes to and from the muffler are 1 3/4in, muffler has 2in in/outlets.
its no louder than the single quietpac, until you step on the gas, but then it only gets slightly louder with a nice rumble.
i still have to take it off and paint it with some 2000deg exhaust paint.
the muffler guy made it so i can take it off easily to adjust my valves. he
made hangers for it too.

^^^ Two things come to mind when I look at your setup. If you use your heat, you have a great potential of sucking exhaust gases into your bus by having the tip in front of the wheel like that. They will be drawn into the engine louvers and into the heating system. Not good.
The other thing is that having the muffler alongside the engine like that makes the passenger compartment of the bus more noisy. I have used a similar hide away exhaust system on several buses, and after running it I switched to either a single quite pack or a stock exhaust and the interior of the bus was much quieter. It's has to do with the sound resonating from the muffler can right under the rear interior compartment. I suppose with good sound deadening it would diminish, but I had a near identical setup in my 65 Riviera packed with camping gear and switching the muffler to a single quiet pack made all the difference in interior noise.
I recently sold my custom hide away exhaust for this reason. Plus I got tired of having to pull it to adjust valves. _________________ nothing |

i have neither of those problems, the guy that installed it also made it so i
could remove just the muffler instaed of the whole setup to adjust the valves.
i already think i'm getting exhaust into the heating system anyway, that was before this muffler though. i'm thinkign of removing the heater boxes
or just let them dump out to the atmosphere.
it runs so much better now though, sounds great too. |

If you don't use the heat, then just unhook the tubes that connect the heater boxes to the body. If you need heat occasionally, you may want to do something different with the exhaust routing, and whatever was leaking exhaust into your heat system. You don't want to breathe that stuff for any length of time.
Removing the muffler to adjust valves was not all that difficult for me either, just a minor annoyance. _________________ nothing |

I used this thread as inspiration for my setup .Heres my lowmaster 1 chamber. I ordered 2 aluminized mandrel bends from summit racing , a couple of reducers and came up with this. It tucks up nice and tight and cant be seen from behind.

Nice. I would like to see the parts you ordered from Summit. How much did it cost in parts? _________________ Kevin Albrecht
