Yes, I think you are correct. The 14" bus rim is 5" wide, but as you can see, it measures over 6" wide from lip to lip. I've also been looking at the offset/backspacing chart from here:

It is getting very confusing to me. From the pics, it looks like backspacing to the bead lip is 4 3/4". SO, on a 5" wheel, that should be about a 47/48 offset. The chart doesn't have 5" rim, but calculating it close gives me that rough idea. Sound about right?

Yes, actual rim width is measured from inside the beads of the wheel. But I had no way to accurately measure from that spot to the mounting surface. I an get those exact rim widths if it would help.

But I can assume that actual rim width is within a 1/4" of 5" for a 5" wheel, don't you think.

So my bus has stock 14"x5" wheels. I think it is probably safe to assume ET offset is about 47/48 as I mentioned above. I think that is at least in the ballpark.

I'm debating running 5x205 Cosmics which are 15x5.5" ET22.

Using this offset calculator:

http://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Wheel-Offset-Calculator#Results

says that I would have 20mm (.787") more clearance on the inside, and would extend out (increase wheelbase) 32mm (1.259") on each side.

SO does a 3" narrowed beam sound about right.

That will depend on how low you want to go, as the wheel well space changes shape the lower you go.

Hate to take this thread to far off topic, but I intend to only go 3.5 inches with flipped spindles and maybe another inch or so. Not slammed.

You should do fine with the 3 inch beam.

14" bus rims are very common here in the states. Why not just find a good used one for your spare. Not sure anyone is making them new anymore.

I'll paint it L82 silver white later

I see them all the time in the $15-$20 range here in the states. Be sure you get a bus rim (not a bug or type 3 rim) as the offsets are different. The easiest way to tell the difference is the bus rim valve stem hole will line up with a lug nut hole:

Here's some in the classifieds:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?...ton=Search

I searched on 14 rim.
As you can see, I leave off the " mark to get more results.
For some reason people selling them right now used rim instead of wheel, I would normally search on 14 wheel

Sorry folks but I have been looking through the forums for over an hour and I have run out of time/patience so here goes;

Will a beetle wide 5 15"x5.5wheel work on a 65 bus? Thanks

In a word, yes. They are not as strong a s a bus wheel, and the offset is different, but they will fit. Many people have run them for many years without issue.

Whew!!!Thanks!!
Next question; Since the offset is different with a 3" drop/lowered bus will there be a possible tire rub without using a great radical some crazy tire size smart car like tire? Rolling Eyes Laughing

That partly depends on the year of your bus, and the tire size.

You will likely rub occasionally when heavily loaded or going around a corner with a large bump.

Thanks, I like the look of the chrome stock style but I may go back to the 14" bus stocker wheels. I don't like the thought of tires (cost/danger) rubbing at any time. This will be a full functioning highway driving occasional camping not just for Saturday night cruise bus..

Its a 65 by the way.

Thanks again

Any idea what these are from? They came on an old dune buggy we bought years ago.

Porsche?

Too many slots of a dissimilar shape to be any Porsche that I'm familiar with.

Tempo?

One of others of that style from that era?

I think they're from an Anglia. I was doing some more searching and just found this.

PostPosted: Sat Oct 19, 2013 9:32 pm    Post subject: What wheel is this? Reply with quote

Today I purchased 2 wheels I thought were 15" bus wheels to complete a set of 5, but when I put them next to my others I realized they were different. They look the same with the 4 large slots and hub cap clips but they are only 4" wide. I have been searching all the forums and thought they might be T3 but these have Hub cap clips. I would like to id them so I can sell them and get 2 others to finish my set and get them to the powder coater.
