Original wheel diameter/width and bias ply tire sizes:
16" wheels - 16"x3.50" - 5.50x16 tires
15" wheels - 15"x4.50" - 6.40x15 tires |
Quick question. I received the birth certificate and data sheet for my '56 single cab (built 8 October 1956) this morning. It declares the rim and tyre sizes as 3,50 x 16 and 5,50 x 16 respectively.
Is that likely just a mistake (Germans?, mistakes? ), or did VW ship any trucks with larger rims after the barndoor era ended?
I've assumed that the 8/56 15 inch crowsfoot rims on my truck were original, given their date. |

They made a mistake.
They are known to make mistakes from time to time.
The birth certificates I have seen don't list the tire/wheel size. Is that a new addition? _________________ How to Post Photos

Given that it took them nine and a half months to supply the information, you'd think they'd have had time to double-check.
The information is on the data sheet, not the birth certificate (I bought both). It lists the general weights and measures info that you can find on the technical pages here, but I thought I'd check as it states some vehicle-specific info, like build and shipping dates and is stated as relating to the VIN. |

Does anyone know what year the 15 x 4.00 fit on. Was it all the years spare rim. or only a certain year. I heard it is a spare tire size to fit behind the seat.
And yes there is such a thing. 15x 4.00.
I aquired one for a spare tire behind my seat of the SO23 but I dont know what it was really suppose to fit.
Any info.
Thanks MIke |
I have never heard of a spare only rim for busses...aren't 15x4s a Thing wheel? |
Defintely not thing they were smoothies? this is a 15 inch slotted 4 inch wide. I heard it is a spare for a 64 but would like to confirm. Looks just like my other bus wheels but little narrower. _________________ Owned Countless VWs over the last 35 years.

look closely at the center area it is flatter.
look how narrow
next to a crows foot
Yes its a bus wheel.... I dont think they put these on anything else. What does it fit?
Look very closely at the picture of the wheel next to the crows foot. The center area is flatter. The regular bus 15s have a higher lip next to the hubcap. This might be the only one left in existence so look closely. _________________ Owned Countless VWs over the last 35 years.

I think one of these wheels was posted a few pages back, or possibly in another wheel thread. I believe the consensus was that it is a German type 181 (Thing) wheel. The German Thing used swing axles and RGB's like an early bus.
Corrections welcome. _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

Not a bus wheel as the valve stem hole does not line up with a lug nut hole. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

Hello everyone
While looking for 15" wheels for my bus, I was offered these.
They are slotted, they are 15" but there are not bus wheels.
No hub caps holders.
The owner is looking for the date but didn't find any so far.

I was doing research on using wide 5 wheels and long story short I am on the hunt for these. This is the only photo I have seen of the wheel. What year bus did this come off of and is there any other name for this particular wheel? From what I found on earlybay.com it was a Kronprinz KPZ rim but I don't quite know how that helps me.

The wheel on the left is certainly a 64+ bus wheel, but the wheel on the right is ever so slightly different and I am having a very tough time finding any. My collection of wheels that the PO gave me are all like the wheel on the left. Everyone in my local VW club down here that I asked has the wheel on the left. People advertising their wheels on this forum have the wheel on the left. I have yet to find the one on the right. _________________ Click to view image

I see the position of where the inner hoop is attached is different.
Could it be a Thing wheel? I believe those have a different offset, which may explain why they are attached in different places. |
I did not spot the offset difference.
Thing wheels are solid. Maybe some are slotted?

Is there a date stamp on the wheel? _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

The drop center section of the wheel on the left is wider than the one on the right. I took a quick look at a stack of 14" bus rims out back and found one like that. It has some different markings on the face than the normal stuff. Date is from 69. I will pull it in the shop for a photo tonight. _________________ nothing |

OK, here are a few comparison shots of a regular 14" bus wheel, and the oddball in my pile. The oddball is on the right in the photos.
Notice the difference in the drop center section of the wheel outer hoop.
Here are the markings on the "normal" wheel.
Here are the markings on the "oddball".
Yes, I know these are both bay window wheels, but the only split bus wheel I had easy access to had a filthy tire mounted and I didn't fell like dragging it into the shop right now. I will check a few other rims when it is daylight, and when it is not pissing down rain. Might be awhile. _________________ nothing |

It's probably not anything cosmic other than the one style can be welded with a different offset depending on application and the strange one is for a fixed offset and may be stronger. |

I am sure it just has to do with varying production. Just wanted to confirm with beatles4 that seeing is believing. _________________ nothing |

Another thing that was happening about that time was safety rim mandates. If the tire blew and you drove on it, it would only come off on the inner side. |
