I have a set of wheels and tires that I am going to put up for sale. I am not sure exactly what I have and dont want to mislead anybody. The wheels have the vw stamp another 5jkx14 and 1/68. So I beleive I have 14"x 5" wheels that were manufactured in 1968. These were taken off a 66 split window. Will these be proper for anything august 63' and up to? Or should these be placed as bay only? years? Thanks

If they are 14" bus wheels, they are correct (size) for 63-70 buses. The date stamps only matter to those of us who are geeks about things being really correct.
Hard to tell from that photo, but do those wheels have slots? If not, they are probably Thing wheels. _________________ nothing |

What size and load rating are the tires? What make and model? How much wear? _________________ nothing |

Okay. I bought my '63 single cab last spring. It has a hodge-podge of different wheels. I think out of the 5 wheels that came with the bus, there is only 1 actual bus wheel, and it may be original to the Single-Cab.
Anybody know what wheels these came off of?
3 of the wheels are like this:
and marked VW:
and 4Jx15:
This wheels has no markings that I could find what-so-ever. I took it from an angle to see the holes around the center. It's also a 15" wheel.
And this is the wheel that is most likely original to the bus:
and it's marked VW and 3/63:
and marked 4 1/2 K x 15:
Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

The last one is correct for your truck. The first one appears to be a Thing wheel since it is 14" with clips but no slots like a bus 14. The middle one is for 66-67 type one VW's. _________________ nothing |

I think the first one is still a 15" wheel...but most likely a Thing? |

Things were 14". If it is 15", then it is possibly early type 3. Could also be beetle, but the offset looks odd. Maybe just the camera angle. _________________ nothing |

It just looked odd to me, but you're right. _________________ nothing |

Picked up this set of 5 recently.... they're KPZ 16x4.5 dated 7/57
I have yet to find anything about 16" that features 4.5, most are 3.5. Anyone else come across 4.5s in 16" before? To be used on what? SC, DC? I believe these may have been on a 58 panel long ago.
Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks Everett... I wrote KPZ directly initially when I bought the wheels but have yet to hear back. I opted to sell the wheels to some guy doing a DC project who liked them a lot, and who I guess has since sold them to someone else under the guise that they are confirmed VW wheels (tsssk tsssk).
I'm still on the fence about yes or no with these wheels, sure would be nice if KPZ would lend a hand. I never tried them on for size but I think rolling some 16.5 x 4 could be pretty cool running wide 5.
Hopefully the new new owner of these will time it right and get the answer to end the mystery. |

Anyone know what the backspace is (in mm) of a 14" bus wheel?

I am thinking you are right Everett, but how can you be so sure? They are in my hands now and do share a lot of similarities with bus wheels, yet they are different. Could they have been a special order 16"? I am talking to KPZ, but I doubt that they have records of 1957.
57 Kronprinz 4,50 E x 16 DIN Bett 19, same bolt pattern and offset as bus wheels:
The last pic shows "S 431C" - looks some kind of weight rating to me !?
ANyhow, I am thinking of running them on my Bus … always liked the looks of 16s - and here I have a wide set _________________ _______________________

I cannot be sure.
Because they are slotted and the center where the hubcaps mounts is much deeper. I have seen others state in the past that slotted 16s were from other European-delivered vehicles. _________________ How to Post Photos

I did a bit of digging, both in memory and online. There were several european vehicles using 5x205 bolt pattern in the 50's. Ford Taunus Transit, Ford Anglia, and Opel were among them. None of those wheels matched what I see here, although Taunus Transit initially seemed the most likely candidate.
I think there's another possiblity. Kronprinz was historically and is a major wheel manufacturer. These wheels are wider than what was offered on VW Transporters in the 50's, suggesting they were produced for a special model. Perhaps a feuerwehr bulli, krankenwagen, or a maybe a VW-based crane? Of course it's all just conjecture at this point. |

^^^ Hey guys - thx for your interest and input! KPZ already wrote back and needed more specs for identification. They did not shy away from the vintage (57) which was my main concern. Hopefully I'll know soon. _________________ _______________________
