Just checked my end play on an engine that I bought used and was planning on stuffing in my 69 bus. Its between .12 - .13

I tried different shims and I couldn't get it any better. What are your thoughts on this engine??? Thinking about buying a long block, but I really didnt want to come off the cash.

.120" is a long way from .005".

That's not a good thing, can you bring it back?

Maybe I will just hold on to it and when I have time to rebuild it on my own I will and put it in my 66 Bug. The engine is a 71 DP out of a van, but I wanna get my 69 westy on the road pretty fast. DO you recommend anyone in the 750 ish price range for a long block?

$750... that barely pays for labor and a gasket set. Not much left for parts.

I wouldn't trust a $750 long block.

Sounds OK... a lot of "reground" but that's what you have to expect. If he does everything he says it could be OK.

$250 for shipping long block is a bit high. $175-$200 is more like it.

Because the rear thrust area in the case is beat... ( the shims just take up play between the thrust of the bearing and the flywheel) if you try to use thicker shims to take up that much "play" all you would do ( if you had run it) is proceed to lock up and spin the rear main bearing.

Thanks for the info, yes the shipping seems high, does anyone know how much a long block weighs exactly?? Maybe I can get a better deal minus the flywheel since I have a resurfaced one ready to go.

The motor pictured on e-bay does not have the necessary mounting points for your rear 69 bus mustache bar, if you are thinking of getting a rebuilt long block it would be best to get one with the correct mounting points or you will have to use a Mickey-mouse adapter :0)
