^been there done that, on my old thing, before I replaced the pans. I have been fighting with oil lines, oil cooler just about done, one last line is still leaking. Discs came in, got them from Carcraftstore so once cooler is done brakes are next, then lots of driving! |

It was disc day! I got the empi kit, have no complaints, had to grind a corner off a backing plate, but other than that easy install. The stopping power is so worth the money, I just wonder why I didn't do this years ago |

I'm not generally into lowered Things but that is one very handsome ride. Great paint, interior, the whole package ... just great.
The double irony of the front plate is priceless. eBay currently has four '73 Cadillac convertibles ranging from $10,100 (5 days to go) to $13,000 (opening bid not taken) with two buy-it-nows in between. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

I took some pics I have been promising for who knows how long. These pics represent 90% of Stage Two of making this "mine" so to speak. This is assuming Stage One was making it road worthy and Stage Zero was straight off the truck.
Engine -- nothing exciting but people do ask to see
Frontal -- just a general pic but a chance to mention it now has H4 headlights
Rear three-quarter -- can sort of see the new chrome wheels with tires
Inside look -- still has after-market steering wheel and stereo I don't like, but duck boards were replaced with rubber mats
Battery tender -- at least that's what my mechanic called it; I'd call it a batter charger but then again, I'm such a layman
Side view -- can see the wheels and the Yokohama Geolander tires better.
Ball joints, disk brakes, oil change, tune-up, and other unseen stuff taken care of. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

Looking great, Oasis!!
I, sure a Domeck will pipe in, but I'd put a dollar that you have a factory "accessory" steering wheel! Looks good to me! Diameter appears smaller than original, though...
Oh, battery tender is correct! It maintains a good charge now the battery as it sits and slowly draws down... It "tends" to the charge as needed, whereas a "charger" brings it from dead/very low up to full... I doubt this unit would fully recover a battery from dead..... Well, no sooner than a week or two anyway(if even the ?) _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

The steering wheel does have a Wolfsburg crest on the horn button. But, you're right, it is small. The speculation by some is that it makes getting in and out easier. I can see that being true as I deal with my own personal set of anomalies. I just don't like the smallness of it once in it and driving.
Thanks for the compliment. And the explanation. I try to use the right words when I can like engine versus motor or transmission versus transaxle. Those are far different than hood versus bonnet and wing versus fender. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

( Note: I just bought my 73 Thing in April) So I'm driving home the other night after flying and as I get about half way, I have to accelerate to pass a slow moving Ford. All of a sudden my 73 Thing starts making a horrendous sound, I'm thinking OMG I have lost my whole exhaust system. I pull over and give the whole system a quick look over, nothing obvious but it still sounds like a have a huge hole. Now I'm thinking Oh crap, blown seal, blown engine, blown SOMETHING!!!! There was no oil spewing out, no rough idle, and no low oil pressure. I'm 10 miles from the house, it's almost 11:30pm so I decide to continue on, ignoring the looks from other drivers. The whole way I anticipate the worst ... KABOOM! Finally I get to the house, park it out front, probably waking up all my neighbors. The next day I get out and take a look at the underside, all looks, take a look in the engine deck, all looks good. At this point I'm like WTH!!!! All of a sudden something catches my eye, my #4 sparkplug is sticking out farther than usual. It was completely out but close enough to I guess cause a spark to ignite the fuel. (see picture) So I check the end, insert it back in, tightened, and give the Thing a crank. Problem solved!! The PO must have changed his plugs and not tightened them correctly. Which leads me to "what did I do to my thing today. I replaced all my plugs and cables, cleaned the deck, checked my rockers gap, added some oil, touched up my tins, and cleaned the underside of the engine. It's amazing how one "THING" on these awesome cars can lead to doing many other "THINGS". Hope you all have a great weekend. I'm heading to the North Shore with the family and our Paddles Boards and Kayaks now that I have my 73 purring again (Before you say it looks like a 74, the PO added the 74 side vents) |

Your Thing looks like it's Candy White, or does the pic just make it look bright? I like it either way.
Great use of the hard top, too. Seeing that keeps me torn between selling mine and figuring out how to store mine when not in use (although I have an ad for it).
(You might want to hit "return" between your text and your JPGs for easier reading and viewing.) _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

Oasis, I think the color code is "artic white" it does look brighter after a fresh wash. I use the heck out of my hard top, thank goodness its re-enforced. I have a lift system designed for Jeep Hard tops. I actually made it out of pulleys, steel cable, and an electric winch. It is attached to the rafters in my garage. It definitely makes it easier to take off by myself and install my bikini top. If I were you I'd find a way to store it, you never know how many are out there and still in good condition.
Thanks for advice on the use of the return, this was my first post inserting pictures.
This is a link for the design I used

That is very interesting. I will have to look at ceiling of my storage area to see if that is doable. There are two light fixtures and two pipes at or along the ceiling, but ... maybe ...
Thanks! _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI
