Ran a few errands and stopped at the Home Depot. As I was driving out a lady walking by said:
"I would tell you you have a really good looking Thing, but that would be completely inappropriate." |

We spent a day in the mountains yesteryday with a Film Crew from Wheeler Dealers filming the Thing for the TV show "Wheeler Dealers" it was picked for a new show on the Thing as the lead in for the the show. We were filming from 0800 till 1530 and sure had a lot of fun. I could not beleave all that goes into about a 1 minute spot as that is what they say it will have. Every angle was filmed for about 2 hours inside and out. Then they spent the rest of the time on road shots with every kind of camera. Highway Patrol all the time. Had a Great Time. It will air around June on the Velocity channel. will let you kown for sure when we find out.

|

Well, I finally got a chance to swap out my carb and dizzy for replacements.
removed: the old Pict 30/31 solex brosol carb
removed: the old 009 bosch dizzy
installed: rebuilt pict 34 carb from (Tim at volkzbitz)
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1546867
installed: new SVDA type dizzy with points
Noticed differences right away once I got the timing and carb's idle set,
when driving this THING with just a 'lil bit o' gas pedal", it now accelerates smoothly up to shift rpm and feels solid with power thru all gears.
(with just a touch of the gas pedal, don't have to floor it or 3/4 pedal it no more)
Big difference from the old carb and 009, as that combo defiantly needed rpms, but seemed to work for what it was.
But now that I have this setup to compare with, there is no comparison;
the new setup defiantly feels WAY better!
Gas mileage seems better now too but didn't drive it enough to run thru a tank and check actual mileage yet.
But, I went to my dad's house and back on 1/2 tank and still have more than a 1/4 tank, I've never got that good of mileage once on the 1/2 tank with the old carb/dizzy arrangement.
had driver side exhaust smoke prior as well, kinda scared me as I thought I may have run the engine too hard/hot, but after a valve adj and old carb/timing setting this cleared somewhat, now after swapping carb and dizy, it's gone.
Yay!
If I had to guess at my previous setup (was it right/wrong/something bad) I'd have to say all my previous problems were probably more carb related than 009 related,
but now, that I have a good pairing (of carb and dizzy) the THING drives much smoother now, this swap didn't make it a race car by any means but it just feels like it's driving/performing like it should have been all along.
Time will tell I suppose, It seems there is a lot to be said for the proper pairing of carb and distributor of which now I've learned is true.

Glad we can help. My Acapulco rolling pan sat in a Porsche museum showing the detail as I was working on the body. |

Have been getting the 73 ready to go to my friends body shop to get a new coat. Will keep it the same color as I like the look of White and I promised the PO that I would keep it that color for Her. Have been getting the new parts a little at a time and have almost everything together. The roll bar and the seats will come out when we get it to the shop. It has been fun and not one bolt or screw stripped or broke while removing them. Gotta love a California car. The new stuff in the rear the old on the front.

State inspection trip today. I discovered last month that inspection had been out since August...oops
short and sweet.
pulled up to local oil change facility that has been doing my safety inspections
never honked the horn or hit a blinker
pulled up, they recognized from prior. started doing paperwork and installing new sticker. good for another year.
TX changing inspection sticker. in future, there will not be a separate sticker for inspection. inspection will be required. the shop will give a report that will be required when you get registration.
not sure if this is national or TX only
mission accomplished and good quick ride today. tomorrow is supposed to be in 70's. may time for another ride |

Made some new cool stuff for my Thing today
A shelf under the dash:
A beer holder for the back passengers
And then I mounted new rubber cover on my handbrake

Broholm - love your Thing, looks awesome!
I have never seen the 'frame' that holds the handbrake cover in place - is that stock, or something you made yourself? _________________ Mike B. |

Hi Mike. Thanks. Its a bit funny with the frame because I first recently found out what it was fore. I bought the car as a project, in pieces, and have slowly emptied the shelfs. When I got to make the last on the handbrake, almost gluing the rubber to the tunnel, I saw some small holes in the tunnel and then remembered af funny looking frame from the shelfs it was a fit, nice.
To answer your question, I really don't know if the car is born with it. |
