Hi Mike. Thanks. Its a bit funny with the frame because I first recently found out what it was fore. I bought the car as a project, in pieces, and have slowly emptied the shelfs. When I got to make the last on the handbrake, almost gluing the rubber to the tunnel, I saw some small holes in the tunnel and then remembered af funny looking frame from the shelfs it was a fit, nice.
To answer your question, I really don't know if the car is born with it. |
Mine is from 1978 and also have that frame... _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538182 |

My original '73 does not have it nor signs it ever had it. My "restored" '74 does not have it either, nor signs it had it before. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

I think it is a after market piece as the holes look like they were put in much later.

My car come from Germany... the other one of Broholm is from Dinamarc...
An aftermarket part on a army car (mine)? Dont think so... The part look that was made from one piece of metal only, without any welding... Will take some photos tomorrow... _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538182 |

Mine is out of the car at this moment...
But looks the same:
Still with brown and yellow paint spots...
Original looks to be black...
So, this one should be on the car since new, when he was in the army... _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538182 |

Here is a diagram of the one on my 73. The thickness I measured is in mm as that is all I use from working on German cars for over 50 years. I used inches for the rest because I have a ruler and can still read that, lol.

I did three things very recently.
One, I visited Thing. That may not sound like much, but given my last several months, it was huge. We have been helping my mother-in-law with many varied things since my father-in-law passed away last summer, doing what we could for my dad until he passed in January, ending an 18-month search for a Touareg by buying a second Tiguan in Colorado and driving it back to Maryland, and trying to get into shape while simultaneously trying to hold off an impending hip replacement until this fall.
And, that is just merely scratching the surface.
The visitation confirmed I want to keep Thing. (I was considering selling it as it sat in its lonely shelter a half mile from my house.)
Two, I exchanged emails with an air-cooled advertiser on theSamba who is only 60-90 minutes away from me about an eventual rebuild of my engine. At this point, I am leaning towards going with a 2007cc Type 1 engine.
I need to investigate how I want to handle the transaxle. I will want something more interstate friendly.
Three, I contacted TTS about their bikini top. Apparently, my questions require a verbal answer rather than a written answer. It may be a week or more before I can call them given our time difference and my schedule with commuting.
I have plenty to do once it gets above freezing again. I have regained my excitement. Heck, I may even play with my rivet gun again. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

Managed to get the garage open and fire up the cars.
Got the THING out and rode around the drive way. Got stuck and had to get out the shovel...
I thought these THING's had posi traction, I only had the passenger rear tire moving but I got it out fairly easy (with the shovel)!
Also installed a "save my bug" oil temp sensor, after my "in the Snow" fun I put 'er back in the garage to await warmer times..
Hope all are doing well!
