Friday I drove (but not in my Thing) to PENNDOT in Harrisburg, PA. Had my 74 Thing title branded as an antique. Was also able to use my own Year of Manufacture license plate. My thing now sports a beautiful Pennsylvania Bicentennial license plate with the old 1974 registration sticker. No more annual registration fees, no more annual safety inspections.

We had both Things out for Cruise Night and received a bunch of Great Looking cars and a lot of people really liked the White one and the color. Also a picture of the cars with the mud flaps changed around. Put the black ones on the white one and the white ones on the blue one. Now they are color matched white and black and blue and white.

Made a trailer for my new project a 1948 Salsbury motor Scooter that I drove to High School in 1963 , (and you thought The Domeck Brothers only rebuild Things) Ron just got all the body and paint done and I did the rest. So it has not been on the street for 52 years the trailer worked great and did not have any problem pulling it with the thing . Now I am ready to show the Thing and the Salsbury for a bunch of shows this summer. If you drive a Thing you have to have a odd Scooter or it would not be normal for me.

Good day in the shop

oldest son back in from college briefly. he has one more week before graduation

started to set valves back at Easter when my son was in from college. discovered excessive lateral play in our solid rocker arm shafts as well as valves. she was ticking pretty loudly. first setting of valves as she is mainly a weekend sunny day driver

roughly right at 3000 miles approx, speedo not 100% accurate due to larger tires

also took opportunity to change oil and filter.

ran out of time. we need to change fuel filter as well. it's the original since build completed. hope to due tomorrow.

good day in shop

We have had a good 2 weekends. My Wife took 1st in the 70's class and I took Best of Show at a show 2 weeks ago and then She won the top prize at a show on Saturday, better than a trophy. She kept saying all day as they were drawing the tickets that she did not want the little prizes She was waiting for the BIG one. She was all smiles both shows.

well the rains subsided today. we saw the sun all day since who knows when. missed out on a cruise night last night due to storms and street flooding again.

mid 80's around 4:30.

loaded up with my new teenager son and went cruising for about 1.5 hours around the area.

first time since March we could get out driving and right after fresh valve adjustment, oil change and filters cleaned.

we had finished shimming the passenger side rocker shaft a couple weeks back. That was a fun exercise getting proper clearance

oil pressure gauge appreciated the fresh oil.

good times today though

We went to the High Desert Marines 2nd Annual Car show. Had a great time and some nice weather for a change. Mostly American Iron but a few VW's and Things. Had a lot of questions about the Things and a lot of Sure Don't See Many Of Them. Mike was there with the Orange one and we had the Blue and White one. We have come up with around 15 Things here in the High but only ever see 5. Everyone you ask if their's are for sale say nope, keeping it.

After spending weeks with TiggeR (my Tiguan) and dabbling with Thing, I have now turned the tables.

Thanks to replies from everyone here, I did a lot (for me, the resident technoklutz) over the past week including today.

- Door pocket molding, check.
- Door gasket molding, check.
- Right rear door not opening easily, fixed (I hope permanently).
- Front hood not opening at all, fixed (but will still install new cable and tubing at some point).
- Replaced three-point front seat belts with two-point seat belts, check (got the rubber mallet out to loosen one persnickety bolt, cured me of being tentative and dainty -- reminded me of what my late father-in-law once said when assisting me with building a deck (yes, I actually did -- wish I could have transported it to my new house), "Make it a custom fit. First, you cussed 'em; then, you make it fit." I think I called Thing a MF a couple of times. I guess I should apologize).
- Added the doohickey to hang the two-point belts when not in use, check.

I was on a roll (for me, remember, I am semi-incapable), so I really wanted to remove the front seats in order to get the highbacks installed. I was running out of time. The seats would glide forward quite a ways, but I was stymied to go the necessary extra.

Installing the convertible top is also on my upcoming agenda.

Then, I can drive an enjoy Thing while other things are being taken care of by others -- namely:
- get the new windshield installed. It arrived at the shop I frequent last week.
- get a new stereo installed. For the moment, I have decided on a tweener approach. Yes to AM/FM/Sirius. Would like (in descending order) CD, to plug in iPod, some bluetooth capability, navigation, and to plug in First Act guitar (never really investigated that). No to vintage radio with splitter, rear view camera, and anything double-DIN. It will go under the dash.
- get new engine and tranny. Shop is assembling the parts needed for the engine; probably will be built and installed when I am recovering from surgery. Tranny will likely be bought outright to specs.
- get new windshield wiper motor. I am leaning towards getting a rebuilt one outright from someone; then have the current one rebuilt as a spare.
- power windows. Just kidding. If anyone has actually read this far, I figured you needed some levity. BTW, someone on eBay is selling window cranks and they listed Things as part of the air-cooled list of cars they would be for.

TiggeR is now set up completely and properly for some towing action. I am leaning towards buying a dolly at some point to take Thing with us on vacations and other adventures when I won't be flying solo. Being the resident technoklutz, I am not completely comfortable just using an Empi tow bar (although it might be handy to have in a pinch for a short trip to the shop if Thing can't go on its own power). I don't have the storage to comfortably own another full trailer for such limited usage.

I had some pics but I know this is all very pedestrian. To me, it's more than that, though. I will continue to read and learn.
