Actually if you use one from 1984+ you do not need to modify the deck lid according to MSDS. I found some specifications and it looks like a standard carrera engine was used ...the Hp/rpm and Torque/rpm are the same as the 911. So that may answer my question about modifing the engine. I imagine the MPG would be the same as my Westy gets now.
Someone here needs to by this B32 and bring it to the US. _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! Oh and I do have modern computer controlled vehicles too, but I just don't care about them. |

You can get rear bed hinges that move the whole bed up a couple of inches, build the entire rear area up to match and then use the extra little cubby space for storage. Fairly common with TDI engines in the 15° install.

Even simpler than using those hinges is to get another cushion made up at a local foam mattress shop. New one will be exactly the same footprint as the original cushion, but thinner (exact height dependant on engine-lid mod... my own new cushion is 2" high).
Too much is made of this "problem". I think it's a non-issue. |

Eventually, the powerplant in my '85 Westy is going to need replacement.
Porsche power is a real possibility. Maybe a water boxer.
I guess I'll have to put on bigger discs up front too.
Someday. _________________ '85 Vanagon Westfalia |

Porsche B32, 11 total. This is number 5.
2 were supposedly shipped to Champion Porsche in Florida, I'm looking for these. If you know anything, please share.
Blue Dash is because it's a "Caravelle Carat"
No coolant temp because it's aircooled! nice tach eh? _________________ Vanagon/Transporter flares here: www.terrawagen.com

Is the front grill for a transmission or oil cooler?

More pics for you to see...
From this pic you can see oil lines, so I would say Yes to a front mounted oil cooler.
Looks like a trans cooler as well.

It looks like a stock 3.2 Carrera engine and late 915 transmission from the photos.
The trans cooler was a stock item on later 915 transmission and necesary to keep temps down with the extra power over earlier engines.
I'd be interested to see the work carried out for mounting the engine/gearbox, oil tank and whether they changed the driveshafts/CVs etc.
I wonder what heating system they had in the van?
Today, I wouldn't entertain putting a 3.2 into a T3, they're too expensive. A great reliable engine but you can get 230bhp from other more modern/efficient engines for less dough.

Well, if you want to build it's cheaper cousin, pmail me. I have the msdsinc.com kit to install a 3.2 Carrera engine in a Vanagon. This kit came out of Marty's (the MS in MSDS Inc.) personal Syncro. He called his conversions 'Range Panzer'. Saw one for the first time at Laguna Seca during Porsche's 50th Anniversary. BTW, all the MSDS kits kept the engines below the stock deck lid.

I grew up around Vanagons and knew about various 911 powered examples when I was in high school - The Martin Schneider 3.2 powered Syncro, the Projektzwo Streetmaster black Doka with 3.2 and G50 transmission, and a local Seattle one built by Denny Akers and powered by a 930 engine.
I've always loved the idea of a 3.2 Carrera powered Vanagon and would still do one today if the right engine conversion package was offered to me. I know that a Subaru SVX, H6 3.0, or WRX engine all have comparable if not better power output than the 3.2 Carrera engine, but having owned a 911 Carrera I can honestly say that power is only half the appeal of the 911 engine. The way the engine comes alive as the tach needle sweeps past 4000 rpms and the way it sounds (race-car like wail at 6500 rpms) are some of the attributes of this engine that can't be detected from a spec sheet.
I completely agree that the cost of these engines, not to mention the rebuild costs is scary, but I'd still do one just because I like the engine so much. Thus is the allure of the 911

I saw Denny in the 930 vanagon today in Woodenville. I rember getting a ride in Dennys 930 powered Vanagon years back. Im sure that was what hooked me!!
Id really like a 915 in front of the suby. Cant see putting a 911 engine in now that Iv played with the Subaru. Maybe a svx turbo??
great thread.
Anyone found the 2 that came in to Fl.? _________________ 87 gl powerd buy 2.5subaru

No, the one pictured above has a stock Porsche 915 3.2 transmission.

It's interesting that the brakes are drilled for both 5x112 and 5x130. _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)
