Hi all,
I'm putting a Vanagon 2.1 engine back together, and I'm trying to reinstall pistons in cylinders. The pistons are VW 93.99mm pistons (which according to the Bentley manual are 1st oversize), and the cylinders check out ok. I picked up some Beck/Arnley 94.00 std piston rings, and am trying to get the pistons w/ rings installed in the cylinder, but am not having much luck. (Can't get the rings past the cylinder top) Have tried several different ring compressors, but have only managed to get one piston into the cylinder, and it's TIGHT. I can move it by hand, but only barely. I checked the ring gaps in the cylinders, and they are within spec. Anyone have any suggestions?

Kevin

Try a piston in the cylinder with out the rings and try to fit the rings in the cylinder by them selves. You need to look and see what the specified end gap is for the rings. The ring ends should not touch when in the cylinders.
You may have to shorten the rings to get them with in spec.

Did you clean out the ring lands? If not then that could prevent the rings from sitting properly in the pistons.
