Episode #9/ season 1- in the middle of "Rockford files" is a crashed split hippy painted bus being towed out of a store front with the offending "stoner hippies" sitting on the curb with the "mean nasty sheriff" talking to Rockford. _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. I wonder if that was the same green beetle they used in the original. Seems like they should have replaced it with a new beetle for this! _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

If you were a teenager in the 80s you might remember the great flick "Rivers Edge" with Dennis Hopper, Keanu Reeves and Christian Slater. I was curious about the baja they used in that film and apparently they used more than one for whatever reason. One has small windows and aftermarket tail lights and the other large windows and tail lights and different wheels and other stuff.

"Tin Men" with Richard Dryfus and Danny Devito. A very funny movie set in the early sixties, about aluminum siding salesmen. They all drive big Cadillacs but there are references to VW Beetles. Richard Dryfus' character is thinking about selling Beetles as a new career. |
Watching it now, Dreyfuss & John Mahoney coming out of commission hearing walk past a black oval. Funny movie and great movie for car lovers. Dreyfuss' loaner Corvair looks fantastic next to all the Caddys.
Same oval cruises in front of Dreyfuss & DeVito near the end of the movie. |

Pretty good homage to the original, but Steve McQueen she ain't!
The green beetle was too shiny, but it was just one of the few details they stuck into the piece. The taxis were in the same place and most of the maneuvres were the same. The shot of the Mustang reversing with the tire smoking didn't have the wheel hop of the original. They did wipe out a camera, though!
Oh, and the landing zones didn't have the oil splotches of the original where they tore out the oil pans on previous takes. |

The Source Family, actually.
On Coronation Street, Steve just bought a sweet splitty Westfalia RHD with safari windows for his cab business. _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS

I watched part of the documentary "Sound City" about the renowned Van Nuys sound studio of the '70s. In several exterior shots there was a Squareback parked in the slots by the door.
Of course, ANY TV or movie in the '70s had VWs galore. What would be odd is to find a movie or show that DIDN"T have a VW in a scene shot!

What sometimes surprises me is that in movies shot well into the 90s, you'll still see 1960s VWs show up. I was watching the Clint Eastwood Gene Hackman movie "Absolute Power" (pretty crappy) and there's a scene towards the end in what looks to be the lower level of a parking garage - what's tucked in the corner - split bus, at least 30 years old. Even a 70s VW would have been cranking on 20-25 years old. So as an East Coaster, it is kind of amazing that a large number were still in regular use. |

They're not documentaries. That old VW didn't just happen to be parked there when somebody wandered by with a movie camera. It was hired for the day and parked right there on purpose.
Which also happens to be one of my pet peeves concerning "period" films. No, we didn't all drive 23-window buses in perfect shape then.
Once, many years ago, two buses got hired for a TV pilot shot in San Francisco: mine and a beautifully restored Splitty. Mine, with its old paint and dents was used as a background. The other bus just had to drive by, because it was deemed "too nice" for the shoot. They liked mine, because they were mocking up a "hobo" camp and needed a crappy bus. |

This isn't limited to VWs. Take any decade before the '70s and you'll be hard-pressed to find "ordinary" cars to dress a scene. Most every car is fully restored and has to remain that way. |
