I'm very ashamed I spotted this, but... In the first few minutes of "Torque" (that horrible MC version of Fast n Furious) the hero chases his ex-girlfriend on bikes through a long shop- heading to her place. In the shop, a splittie is getting worked on.

More reasonably, in the final scene of Clint Eastwood's 1997 "Absolute Power," Clint's character walks through a hospital parking garage to visit his daughter (set in WDC)- and he walks past a 21w- probably a leftover from his Dirty Harry days.

Someone in that cast or crew has a thing for vintage VW's there is an episode with a Karman Ghia in a sub plot involving Scott Bakula's Karman Ghia being tuned up for ex wife.

I have a wide range of Clint Eastwood's movies in my collection (all the Dirty Harry films and more).
Is/was it just a product of being filmed largely in California in the late 60's/70's...or does/did Clint Eastwood have a fetish for ACVW's?

A huge amount of ACVW's in the background...and we all know that these movies were not just filmed on open streets with available traffic. Everything in the backgrounds is largely placed there. Ray

I think it was the times, and the cars were relatively cheap. Watch old Dragnet episodes, for example, which were often filmed in real places not on a set, and those damn beetles are EVERYwhere! Wink By the '70s they were so popular here that at any given stoplight, there would be several waiting at the light.

If you are dressing the backgrounds and you have a choice between $2500 VWs and $5000 Chevys guess which one ends up overrepresented? You can fit more of them on the trailer too!

My brother's 1970 VW Bug was featured in a TV show here in San Francisco. They paid him 600$ to use it.

They show was Alcatraz... It was on Fox.

With 40 some pages I didn't go through to see if this was already posted or not, so if so, oh well.

Watching The Racers The other night with Kirk Douglas and not too far in a split window sun roof beetle drives through in a somewhat bird's eye view camera shot.

It would make a lousy drinking game to take a shot every time you saw a bug or bus in an episode of the Rockford Files. You'd pass out in the first fifteen minutes. I would venture to guess that it is more likely that there isn't an episode that DOESN'T have a VW in the background in at least one shot.

I saw Dick Van Dyke driving a soft top early 60's Beetle in a movie called "Divorce American Style"....it was the car he got to drive after his divorce while his friends were still driving spiffy 1967 vintage American and European metal....

I don't know if anyone mentioned this but there is a white beetle in the first Jurassic Park http://www.jplegacy.org/jpencyclopedia/?p=4293 You can also barely see what looks like a bus in the "Dont get cheap on me Dodgson" scene in the background https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4MUBQNbTYo

I would want that 412 only if I delivered mail to mailboxes at the curb in the US.

I did a quick search and didn't find any mention of this but all through "The Wonder Years" VW's are prominently featured. Kevin's teacher "Miss White" drives a white or very light blue 65 (I think) beetle. In a later episode another of his teachers drives a Ghia. Karen's boyfriend drives bus in a couple of episodes. There's also an episode where Kevin has several encounters with a rival pizza delivery driver who is in blue VW. All through the series in many of the exterior shots VW's abound. In the last few seasons when Kevin and Winnie go to the make out point, they are almost always parked next to a blue Beetle.
