Will sand blasting the outside of the case help with cooling?
I know some motocross engine builder used to sand blast the outside of the cylinder to help with cooling. I was thinking about making some bolt on covers to protect the mating surfaces and blasting the out side of the case with 80 grit garnet we use in the water jet machine to clean the outside of the case and give it a textured finish, any body think this will help cooling?

A rough or textured surface works only for still air. When you have air or liquid being used to cool it you want a fairly smooth surface..
The places where the air is still on a VW motor such as the cylinder, pushrod tubes and oil pan faces are also high heat areas. It is warmer in these areas than inside the motor so you would absorb heat. Any heat inside of the engine compartment will just add heat to the cooling air and the Combustion air. The only place you could do something like that is the bottom of the oil pan but it is already ribbed for heat transfer.

So I would say No. It is a waste of time.

No, but it will definitely help plug your oil galleries. Laughing
