ok so here it is. i know beetles and super beetles will be around for many years to come and well i want to make it my career to make quality parts for them. i have decided to become a mechanical engineer and go to college after my stint in the Marine Corps. and after working on harrier jets for 5 years my time will be up.
the parts that i am most interested in would be body and interior parts. the production of carbon fiber parts for the vw bug and super dub. is there anyone out there that would be interested in these parts. i dont want to start a journey if no one would be interested.
carbon fiber has many uses including weight reduction, improved strength, it does not rust. which means your pride and joy would then last that much longer.
i would start out making fenders then move on to other body panels. my goal is to keep vw bugs around as long as possible. and to try not to change the way bug look, but to improve on the design of 60 years ago.
i appreciate all the feedback that i get and it will all be taken into consideration.
thanks

Check out Jake and Beth Raby's car:
those bumpers are apparently one-off creations. also has CF running boards, headlight rings, rear fender guards, door handle guards. _________________ '73 Super

If you make hoods for the 71 Super I'd buy one!
I'm not that familiar with the properties of carbon fiber. If there was a savings in weight and better durability than fiberglass, with the added benefit of not rusting, I'd be in.
Thanks for serving our country!

that picture looks awesome and gives me more interest in my future. are those all carbon fiber? or did they overlay the bumper and all the trim???
as far as the strength to weight. carbon fiber is used in aircraft solely for its strength to weight ratio. our airframes shop has a roll about 4 ft high by 100 yards of aircraft grade carbon fiber and we have the composit repair kit to manufacture small parts but use hi- sol as our resin and it does not require large amounts of heat.
if i chose to start the buisiness i would take all the pieces of the bug into consideration and the harder to produce pieces would be upon request only. i am looking into this because i need to come up with a senior project when i go to college and i thought this would be a good start. and seeing as im not in school yet im trying to be prepared. _________________ 71 super beetle w/ 1776 dp |

no one makes the rear window vents for 71 super's. I know I am not the only one that would be interested in them if made. _________________ 0 to 60 in a neck snapping 4.6 MILES!

Here is another pict of some CF parts.
I have also seen valve covers, door panels, door handles etc. I think Super Beetle and earlier hoods and all styles of rear decklids would be popular. _________________ In pursuit of superior handling!

i would buy a set of doors boot and deck lid and running boards if there reasonably price. Seibon (i think thats how its spelled) makes carbon fiber doors for the mitsubishi eclipse and i think the vw door would be far easier to make and probably have less stress. you could probably even make some killer mirrors. i think its a great idea with all these young-ins who r into street racing might see the carbon fiber parts and start to change there opinion on these "stupid" cars (i have a plan to put about $10 k into my 69 vw bug just to clarify i don't think vws are stupid) anyway good luck with your venture
sincerely, J |
