Did VW make a large type key that fit on the rear lid of the bug? The key was sold as an accessory? Does anyone have any photos? Links?
Thanks!

Are you referring to the gimmick key? When attached to the decklid, it simulated the appearance of a wind-up toy Beetle?

I think you have to ask the owners of "Herbie" bugs. I think they have them all. Wink

I thought it was only a gimmick. Any photos? What year did they sell the key from and to?

There were some sold by VW. I have not seen many for sale (not even on ePay). I will try to get some pictures of mine and no I do not or ever plan on owning a Herbie Twisted Evil

There is also a version that has a large rubber suction cup to fasten the key to the deck lid, like this:

The old ones are cool for the novelty factor, but thieves and strong winds might make your novelty fly away. On top of that, the key is motionless when the car is moving, unlike the original little key cars it is based off of which turn as the car moves.

If its something that you want semi-permanently attached to your car and spinning while you're moving this is the way to go.

There is a push in knob that allows the key to be taken off the shaft when you are going down the highway or parked in a unsecure lot.

nice, this one is the original dealer key. I have one N.O.S. In the box, had it for about 15 years now. I believe my dad has one too. They are indeed rare to see.

Thanks, Ronnie.
