165/80R15 is basically the same size, though I haven't had any experience with those particular brands.

The tire companies pretty much dropped the 165SR15 and 165R15 designations a few years ago. The 165/80R15 is about as close as you can get, although none of those tires are as large in diameter as the original bias ply tires were.

Classic tires. Yes I have those on my stock 62 bug. They are OK. China made - I got mine in 2009 before that import tarriff stuff came up on Chinese tires. I just put two photos of them in the Gallery. The first one here is a pretty large photo - click to enlarge if you want more detail.

Thanks for posting the photos. Those appear to be a decent tire for the price. Im guessing they have like a 40k treadwear rating? I've seen some tires like Pirelli advertised up to 80k but will cost over double.
So are you satisfied with them as far as ride /road noise? Being an aircooled car road noise probably doenst matter much anyway Smile Nankang tires are probably China made as well.
http://www2.cip1.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=B99%2DC10%2D6654
Nankangs would cost about an extra $50 over the Classic. Wondering if they are much better. (Nankang has a traction-A Temp-B rating) I dont plan on going anywhere near 120 mph in the Ghia so Im guessing either one should be sufficient for just coasting around town.

I have no idea what milage these are rated for - but I'm only really expecting the usual 30K - maybe 40K out of them. They ride fine, no issues there. Haven't driven that car a whole lot since I put them on though. My last big trip in that car came a few months before I got those tires.

I just researched how to understand tires ratings & did a research on the tires...interesting stuff ! Laughing Classic has a treadwear of 280 where Nankang is rated at 400 meaning Classic may not last quite as long. ( ie: 400 will last twice as long as 200 rating) traction is a B Temp B (A or AA would be the best rating.)
Nankang is A for temp A for traction. Yours may be rated different being older ..not sure) but figured it was worth sharing this info to anyone shopping for tires. Conclusion Nanking slightly better tire/slightly more expensive.

I haven't researched tire ratings in a long time - did the temp ratings also have anything to do with cold weather performance? I know snow tires are "softer" so they grip better when it's frosty outside - and they wear out quicker if you don't take them off once the snow melts. I don't drive this car a whole lot when it's icy out but if a B rating on temp means they'll grip better in the snow then that's fine with me. In Wyoming and Colorado where I do most of my driving these days, you never know what kind of weather...

Tire wear ratings are crap, have no scientific basis, and only reliably relate to tires by a single company for comparison. You cannot be sure that a 280 Classic will wear faster than a 400 Nankang for instance. It would be really great if someone would come up with an industry standard that is of use to us the consumer.

Did some checking around and found a comapny called MR. Tire here in Baltimore who deals with brand called NEXEN SB802 on the rim out the door price of $66.99. Pretty good tire rating though as previously mentioned that doesnt mean much.

Any user experiences, general comments about the "Nankang CX668" tire in 165R15 size?

I saw them today on Discount Tire Direct at $68 each, and, it appears, free shipping...

(...starting to look at other alternatives for blackwall 165R15 radials, now that Tires Unlimited is sounding pretty hopeless about when their next shipment of Vredesteins may come in...)

I just ordered a set of the 155/80/15 BF Goodrich from Tires-easy.com for $53ea delivered. I spoke to BFG and they said they are made in the US (probably) by Michelin (parent company) as are 90% of their products. I am holding my breath that these might be a little better than the Chinese offerings.

I believe that those of you looking for the 175/15 should look at the European supplied Smart Car - I recall that they were supplied with these over there, so they may be available if enough people expressed an interest.

I've purchased a few sets of NEXEN's so far, one set for my '75 La Grande and I had a set of winters on my Fox. Great tires, hard wearing, never had issues with them. Michelin's on the other hand, my experience is that they aren't worth the money and stay away from them. Pure garbage.

I've only seen good things about Nexen on here. Picked up a set myself. You got a good deal, for them. I talked the local tire store down to $80 a piece with mount and balance.

I bought Nankangs from CIP. They don't fit in the spare wheel space on my bug and I find the ride not so nice. They seem to be pretty cheap quality. They were not expensive but I regret buying them.

Most of the Chinese ones have a single polyester sidewall layer. If inflated to VW specs they are way too soft on the sides when cornering. BF Goodrich 155 x 15 are the correct VW factory size, fit the spare wheel well and are 2 ply sidewall. Made in Mexico where at least they built the bug up until the 21st Century, so they should know what they are doing. Euzkadi 155 x 15 were better I think (made by Continental in Mexico) but the factory was closed when they went on strike for more money!

I obtained Kumho 165 80R15 from JC Whitney this spring. The price was good, and shipping was lightning fast. I honestly could only find 2-3 online places that had this tire size at all. I've had the Kumho tires before on another car. They are Chinese but do the job for the amount of driving I do.

i got a full set of these from my local Les Scwab, they are OK, but not that great on wet roads, which being in the Seattle area is a drawback.

After some digging I found a set of 185-65R15 at my local Good year. Is this a good replacement for my 165R15? Will it mess my speedometer up at all?
