Your speedo will read 1.22% too fast - not worth worrying about. _________________ 1967 Ghia

No.
When you are driving 60 mph, the speedo will read 62.2 mph. Those tires are just a bit shorter than the stock ones. |

Are they a great fit for the stock rims? Ive never ordered tires over the internet before. Is there a better brand that sells the stock size for a cheaper price than $79? |

I found that the 185/65R-15 are right at 100.00 cheaper out the door at Discount Tire than the 165/80R-15. I assume these will fit my stock rims? _________________ My VW History:

I put new Nankang 165/80/R15's on my beetle last August and really lucked out, they were made in June 2011! I don't remember where I ordered them from, but I got them for $54 each. I could hunt the invoice down, I just remember that the site I bought them from was not really highly rated. But for $54 each, I couldn't complain...Aren't the stock tires 155/80/R15's? _________________ PNW Dub Folk & Kitsap dub Folk (KdF)

In 1973, the stock tire size was 6.00x15. Bias ply tires are usually taller in diameter than their "equivalent" radials, 165SR15 was the closest equivalent for many years. Those were often "82" profile tires, but nowadays, 165/80R15 is the closest size, but neither of those were as tall as the original bias plies were.
(It was in mid 1972 that VW changed from 5.60 x 15 tires to 6.00 x 15 and from 4 inch rims to 4.5 inchers. 155SR15 was the traditional equivalent to 5.60x15 tires, and today's 155/80R15 are not nearly as tall as 5.60x15 bias plies were) |

I have a set of falken ziex 165 15 60's on the front of my car and a set of 205 15 60's on the rear. Looks great and the front is the perfect size. Dont know where to get them again though because i cant find them anywhere. No problems finding the 205's but the 165's, nobody seems to make anymore. _________________ 1974 SuperBeetle Build

Another possible replacement size is 175/65-15. While not as tall as stock, at least they should fit 4.0-4.5 rims better than wider tires. This is a common size for modern Japanese subcompacts, Yaris, Fit, etc. |

If 185/65/15 throws off the speedo readings why does anyone bother getting them? Is it just because they look different (is it really noticeable?)
Are there any performance benefits with 185s, or performance disadvantages with the stock 165/65/15? _________________ 03/1971, 1302 Super Beetle 1600 dual port

Price and availability is the main reason.
Speedo accuracy is probably the least of most peoples concerns, VW speedos aren't usually 100% accurate after 40ish years anyway.
I ran 185/65 Federal Formozas on my stock 4.5" rims and was happy enough with them.
The Tread is wider and has a more modern pattern, much safer in the wet, and lower profile sidewall gives less flex in corners.
I put them through their paces plenty of times through the bendys, less sidewall flex than stock 165s and certainly more grip. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

Hmm interesting, thanks! I'll see what the availability and price is like in Turkey for 165, otherwise I'll go for 185 then. Do the 185s LOOK noticeably different though, as though the car has been lowered a bit? _________________ 03/1971, 1302 Super Beetle 1600 dual port

They look a bit wider but most people wouldn't notice.
