As far as I know the lifetime replacement stuff only pertains to replacing the tire if it gets damaged before it reaches the minimum thread depth dimension. It doesn't mean it will last a lifetime. Very high probability you will never use any part of that warantee.

Lifetime replacement is "Life" of the tire, not the life of person or car. I have used this multiple times when I get a flat, or have a tread blow. They have no problem replacing them. Plus Free balancing, for LIFE Smile of the tire

My local Walmart looked them up and they are not listed as an order item anymore. Maybe a few stores have old stock to sell off. The closest size is the 185/15 which is incorrect for that application.

Go online and check. One day they were available, and I did the check invertory in local stores. Said there were some locally. Went to the store and they didn't have them. Went home, back online and they weren't available. Two days later they were available online and I ordered my tire.

Keep checking.

hey sambans...
There a a couple of tire places locally that are having a winter tire sale, what with winter almost over and all...
Anyway I haven't called or looked into it yet but wanted to ask what the closest-to-stock- winter tire size is. I've got some "older but still good" sears all season 165R15s on the front, my rears are shot 165SR15s that I wanna replace with winter tires, as i've got some nice whitewalls on painted stock rims for summer.
Do I just ask for 165/80/R15 winter tires? I'm assuming wherever i go they aren't gonna have these sizes on the shelf, so I'd like to know what size to ask for to price them out.
Thanks a million!

I think Vredestein may be the only brand you'll find who does snow tires for Bug sizes. But as those are pretty rare to find tires in the USA I doubt you'll find them in an "end of season blow-out" sale.

Walmart seems to be out of stock on the 165/80/r15. Did find some on ebay though with free shipping.

Treadwear Warranty: N/A (damaged/defective only)
Tire Type: Passenger-
Sidewall: Black Sidewall
Speed Rating: T (118 mph)
Load Index: 87 (1201 lbs.)

118 mph should be good enough for most VW applications. Laughing

I'm a big fan of Vredstein. They're not the least expensive tires on the market, but I drive my 1999 Mexican Beetle as a daily driver and the tires have worn very well and held their balance as well. The only tire I have had on an aircooled Volkswagen which has been comparable would be the Michelin XZX.

As for the place to buy? The folks at Import Tire in Glastonbury, CT have been fantastic (and have been by go-to guys for other cars in my fleet, including a non-stock diameter stepdown for my 2005 Lotus Elise).

There are a number of regional distributors listed on Vredstein's website, if you want to see if there's a distributor who may be closer.

I just purchased 4 new tires (165/80R15) today from Discount Tire. The store had 7 in stock, After it was all said and done, new valve stems, balancing, install, and all the taxes with full replacement warranty for the life of the tire, I spent just under $375.

They were new 6 years ago when this thread was started... Big O Tire has the Classics, not a bad tire.

I'm not very happy with the Classics, myself. 23K and they are about down to the wear bars.

just picked up a flat on the Classic tires the other day when we were getting the "wintry mix" up here. Worst day to get a flat EVER. Wasn't even a nail, it was like a small piece of folded aluminum. You could bend it in your hand easily, but it punctured that Chinese tire pretty well. Got it plugged now and probably only 5-6k miles on 'em. Some "NOS" sears winter 165R15s on the front that likely ran over the same piece of metal, and they are about 12 years old and holding up fine. No cracks in the rubber or anything.

A little backwards ? don't the snows go on the rear of a rear drive car?

I thought about that, and had 2 factors determine how I put the tires on. 1) the Classics do say "all season" just like the Sears, but the Sears tires have a much more aggressive tread pattern, so I figured the Classics would be ok in snow and whatnot, and 2) the Sears tires are actually the correct stock radial tire size, so I figured my speedo would be more accurate. Haven't had any issue with slipping or spinning tires this winter yet, The Classics have held up pretty good except the puncture. Also I figured the more aggressive tread in the front would help with the steering, what with the car being so light in the front, thought they'd grip better. Maybe I'm wrong on that though? Be easy enough to swap them....

My experience with tires that are "all season" is that they forgot to check them out under real winter conditions, you know, where that white stuff falls at times and accumulates ? they don't work very well here in Wonderful wintery Wyoming
