When I do replace my tires, the preference is to make the purchase locally/nationally if not regional. Meaning discount tire, Big O, Walmart etc.

When I first started doing my bug I got some totally outstanding tires from Discount. Arizonian brand no less and the right size. To bad they are no longer made. However even if Arizonians were still made I wouldn't buy anything from Discount. A totally bogus tire store. _________________ 71 Superbug

Just bought 4 Kumho tires from Discount Tire for $450. Seems like the prices keep going up. 165/80-15 |

Does anyone know of a name brand tire in the 165r 15 or close? Something like Goodyear, Pirelli, Michelin, anything I have heard of before. No Chinese tires, good ones, thanks! _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. CB 044 heads, AutoCraft rockers, chromoly push rods

When it comes to tires, some American ones are real killers. Remember Firestone motorcycle tires in the '70's? How about Firestone tires on the Ford SUV's?
No, some American tires are not any better, and may be far worse than chinese.
I have Kumho tires on my bug now and they're wearing very well. Actually, not much at all.

I have 2K miles on a set of these "Firestones". I think they're made by Coker not Firestone but I like the handling, thread wear is as expected at 2K and a reasonable price. Of coarse shipping isn't free from Coker so you end up ~$100 per tire

Yes, they are made by Coker but they use Firestone molds.

I would prefer 175-65 on fronts and 185-65 on rears as these are easier to find. |

My local place will sell me Kumhos or Continentals in 165/80 15, does anyone like either of those two? I don't know where they are made though.
EDIT Well the Continentals are not right, they are 165/60 15 apparently. So I am about to go get the Kumhos for 350 bucks. I hope they are good, I feel frustrated that I have no choices to speak of. The Coker tires sound ok, but I read about people having issues with them separating. I love the look of the Michelin XZX radials they make, I used to buy those tires new back in the 80's. Are the copy's very good? I might call them and ask about those. _________________ 1971 Deluxe Sunroof Bay 1905 stroker, dual idf40's, 74mm Scat forged crank, engle 110 cam. I bought a set of Kumho tires in late 2012. These are the specs:
165/80R15
Made in china
Treadwear 400
Traction A
Temperature B
I have about three thousand miles on them now and they have shown no wear to speak of. They handle well and aren't noisy.
What else can I say? They work.

So whats the situation currently with tires around the US? I have found Nexen, Nankang, and Classic all come in 165/80r15. I am unable to locate and any Kuhmos or other brands. They seem to be running around $425 mounted and balanced. Any one having luck with any of these or have alternatives?

Also check the Coker site.
There's no problem getting tires for bugs. The 165 size has a low turnover for tire shops so not unusual that they don't have them on hand- but there are many brands available |
