2.5% worse than the 165/80R15, but keep in mind that the original bias plies were larger in diameter than the 25.4" you get from the 165s.
I wondered about the BF tires still being available, because the only sellers in my bookmarks that actually list the tire, both show it as backordered.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox. |

I put about that many miles every 1.5 months lol!
I better stock up on tires... _________________ (Owner) www.vintagecarleds.com

I had some on order for over a month earlier this year, and had to cancel. Couldn't find anybody anywhere that had four in stock. |

Hi. Looking for current feedback on the latest available 165's. Application is a friends '74 ghia, all stock. Used as a daily driver in the SoCal area. Looks to be these two available tires.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?username=DiscountTireDirect
I've seen there is a tire called Federal in this size too.
Not interested in the Coker company's tires.
Thanks in advance, Bill. |

I run the Nankings. They're fine--and, fortunately, nice and round, unlike the Kumhos I had which were out of round.
B F Goodrich also makes a nice 165 with a 3/4 inch whitewall (like many 1974 Ghias had bak in the day). You pay a lot more for them, though. But they sure look nice.

Thanks Tim. Yes the BFG is a nice looking tire and the retailers must think very highly of this tire judging by its price, $165. I've sent DiscountTireDirect an e-mail for a price quote. Their last time on thesamba was a couple of months ago, so we will see. I have a lot of tire stores here in town so going to see how this plays out. I will try and report back results as it seems these tires could eventually be more difficult to obtain.

I wouldn't worry about a 165 shortage. After all, you can still buy new tires for a Model T. However, 165's are not stocked in all tire stores as in past years, so I understand your issue.
Yes, the BFG's ar $165.00, plus you have to pay for spin balancing and mounting. That's about $800.00, or thereabouts. Oh, and shipping.
By the way, Amazon sells Nanking tires, and I got free shipping on them.

For four of what? The photos are too blurry to read the brand. |

Yep, Nanking. Those are the ones I mentioned previously. You gotta love the way Amazon ships them: in plastic wrap
However, mine were nice and round; so if you own a picky Super Beetle that shimmies at 60 mph--despite rebuilding your entire front end--these tires are a good set. Cheaper tires often have out-of-round issues, but these Nankings were great.
Thomas, I love that blue color on your bug.

I just bought four Nanking 165/80R15 for my 1970 through local dealer, had them next day installed. $50 each + all the other crap/fees, came to $283. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Just a warning on the Nankangs, I have 7600 miles on a set on my 60 and 2 have slipped belts, pretty disappointing and the 2 that are still good have only 5/32 tread left so that means very little mileage even if they don't fall apart
On the other hand, on my 70 I have a set of Nexens and at 23K they till have 6-7/32 tread left and wearing evenly across. |

Don't worry - I'll NEVER get near to 7600 miles on the Nankings, the 1970 VW is going to be used for a commuter car at my place up north, and to pull a drag harrow through the horse arena !!! So I expect that VW to go less than 2000 total miles in its "second life" ! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Winter tire info:
This thread the subject of winter tires came up:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=668213
the OP got some winter tires (Vredestein) that are real close to stock size and available in USA. They are 165/65/15. How will this affect gearing and the speedo reading?
I had been poking around for stock sized winter tires and finally got an answer:
Heard back from Tires By Web today. Vredestein Snow Classic 165/R15 (sidewall is equivalent to 82) are available special order from Holland. 6-8 week lead time. $154 each tire shipping included.
800-576-1009 is the number. _________________ 1971 STD BEETLE- DD-1st car, 1st love. keepin' it stock! 1600DP, Solex 34-3 Mexi Bosch SVDA Dist NOW w/POINTS

Short tires on the back like a 165/65/15 will gear down the final drive.
The speedometer only cares about the size of the tire on the drivers front. |
