I just sent a query to tiresunlimited to see if they can get the same tire in a 165. A site in Germany indicates it exists. |
I received this reply from the GM of TiresUnlimited:
"I am sorry that this tire is not available. Vredestein did not make them for this winter season for Europe or America. Hopefully, you may be able to find some in stock from last year." _________________

Yesterday I received a 165/80R15 Kumho Power Star 758 from Tire Rack, it had been on back order since August. It's brand new, date code is 4008 (late Sept/early Oct 2008). However, today I see they've deleted that size from their website, so I wonder if they're NLA. _________________ Mike

Lets hope someone starts to make the 175/70R15 then, the proper sports tires for BIG beetles and other with the 5.5 inch rims. There's a lot of tires that will fit the rims, but just a few that has the right overall diameter. Today's golf has 196/65R15 as a basic tire size, just the right diameter, but too wide for many car/rim combinations. 185/65 are way too small in diameter. |

I found Nanking 165 R 15 tires in stock in my home town at Fargo Tire on Main Ave in Fargo, North Dakota. Here is their phone number 701-232-7177. They have about a dozen in stock right now and carry them on a regular basis for farm equipment/spray coupes. When I called and asked about the size, he asked right away if I had a Beetle so they must sell quite a few to VW owners. The price quoted was $62.67 with $10.00 extra for mounting. _________________ 1973 Standard Beetle

|
|
Hi all, if anyone is still looking for 165 80 15 tires for the original VW rims, there is a store called Roy Rogers Foreign Car Parts out of Little Rock, ARK that stocks Kumhos in this size for $90 apiece and ships for FREE.
I know the Nankangs are available through a few outlets, but I personally would prefer a more reputable brand (and their price has recently gone up.) The Vredesteins are supposed to be very good tires but are more expensive, and you have to pay for shipping. So I thought I would throw out an alternative that rests somewhere in the middle. They also stock a load of other classic VW parts and seem to be much better in pricing than other stores I have found, plus any order over $50 ships for FREE. (I am not affiliated with them in any way, other than they are in my hometown and were the place for me to go many times for my VW parts.) Check them out at
http://www.royrogersparts.com/mrb10-4028-0.html
Hope this helps some folks. |

Go with the Vredesteins mentioned in the previous post. $86 for 155SR15 made in Europe, compared with made in China crap with soggy sidewalls for the same money, it's a no brainer.

...but what about white stripe tires? I'd like to get some that look like the original tires for my '78 Super Beetle convertible.
I like the idea of the Vredesteins but it looks like they only come in blackwall versions.
I want to go with a very high quality tire in a stock size whitewall - any suggestions? I live in the Dallas, Texas area.
Thanks. |

Those whitewalls look great- I just can't afford to spend $600- $800 on tires. |
