Installed new king pins and link pins. Good thing I had a hydraulic press to use on the kingpin. stupid fiber washer in kingpin kit is too thick to use, had to reuse old parts.
Much better driving tho - no shimmy, no clanking at potholes etc. _________________ 1965 Type 1 sunroof Baja / about 70k miles on self-rebuilt '74 1600 and counting / SP heads and aftermarket valve keepers / non-doghouse shroud with external cooler and filter / 1.5 qt extended sump / Weber 32/36 DFAV progressive carb / 009 dist with Pertronix / 1.25 ratio rockers and ball adjusters / 1.5" stainless steel J-pipes and carbon steel baja exhaust |

Dropped my painted seat frames off at the upholstery shop today to have the euro cloth covers installed. I am excited to see them after so much waiting. I then went to visit my car at the body shop and it is near primer now. I have never even seen the body with fenders and doors so that will be awesome.
Also picked up my wheels for my Capri Blue car and I have to say they look great. Tomorrow I will get the Coker white walls installed. So excited to see my project moving ahead.

Cheating a little: This is what I've done in the two weeks that I've owned my '66 Beetle.
Got tags and title and insurance squared away. Cleaned and detailed the interior. Took out the paperboard glove box and shored up the duct-tape repair that the previous owner had performed. Waited for parts to come in the mail. Put in a new defrost vent trim piece. Tried and failed to figure out why the key won't unlock the doors. Cleaned out and detailed the trunk (I'm fine with some dirt being in there, but I want it to be MY dirt.) Replaced gas cap gasket and gas tank vent hose. Waited for parts to come in the mail. Removed the front bumper, treated some pitting, and repainted the bumper supports and the back surfaces of the blade and bumper guards. Failed to completely get the round bumper support grommets to reseat when reinstalling. Took apart and cleaned housings and lenses of the turn signals, tail lights, and license plate light. Waited for parts to come in the mail. Added grease to the front beam. Thought I had broken my brand new floor jack but realized I'm just an idiot. Replaced the wiper blades. Repainted the original jacking bar(?) and lug nut socket(?). Replaced the brake and clutch pedal pads. Cleaned one wheel well and fender and gave it two coats of rubberized undercoat. Waited for parts to come in the mail. Stocked up on fuses and gas filters and oil and such. Washed the car.
Up next: Undercoating the other wheel wells. Replacing swing axle boots and topping up gear oil. Waiting for parts to come in the mail. |

Does your door handle have the pin in place that aligns the outer door button with the handle body? See the attached image.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/742146.jpg
If it's not there search "67 door handle rebuild." There is a very easy $3 fix that I did last week on my 67 that would not unlock with the key.
Yes, I know that mine is a 67. I checked the galleries and found that the internal mechanism is similar.
Welcome and good luck. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Hi, 67rustavenger.
That's a good question. I don't know the answer because I couldn't get the rubber door seal pulled out of the way in order to remove the door handle. It's wedged in there something fierce (and maybe glued?). I gave up when I tore a small piece of it by pulling it too hard. It looks pretty new, and I didn't want to do any more damage. Any suggestions? |

Sounds like the door seal is indeed glued into the channel.
I just looked at my door and can see the door handle screw heads by pushing the seal deep into the door channel toward the outside of the door. You can probably get them out with the seal in place. But it's gonna be a fight.
I can't help with getting the glue to release "sorry"
I bet grampa pete will have a suggestion though. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Installed a roller throttle cable tube for my binding issues with my ICT's. Man what a difference. Those of you with cross bar linkage need one of these.
I had to learn how to use the gas pedal all over this morning. _________________ 1966 Euro

So ...beetles DON'T float? Or did you leave the sunroof open? What a mess. Sorry. _________________ "If you can't fix it with pop rivets, crazy glue and duct tape, or hold it together with zip ties, velcro or magnets, it REALLY is broken." |

Took my back seat to this place to have the piping restitched. They did a great job and had it ready two days later. Great place if you are nearby.

Get a plastic knife and make a mini scraper ; use the scraper to get the rubber loose enough to get at the screws without scraping the paint . |
Thanks, grandpa pete. I'll give it a shot. _________________ '66 Beetle |

Pulled the engine to replace the 3-yr old, cracked oil hoses connecting my oil cooler, oil filter, and Empi oil adapter on the block. Changed oil & filter too...put it all back together and tested it. Now to drive 62 mile round trip to san Diego and then 80 miles back to san Bernardino....200-250 miles every weekend with my Baja daily driver. _________________ 1965 Type 1 sunroof Baja / about 70k miles on self-rebuilt '74 1600 and counting / SP heads and aftermarket valve keepers / non-doghouse shroud with external cooler and filter / 1.5 qt extended sump / Weber 32/36 DFAV progressive carb / 009 dist with Pertronix / 1.25 ratio rockers and ball adjusters / 1.5" stainless steel J-pipes and carbon steel baja exhaust |

Saw some "bubbling" from this area and decided to take the plunge last night with my orbital sander and some 380 grit. this is one gnarly area that may just get covered right back up for awhile... _________________ 1966 T-1 1300cc "Minnie"
